After a heavy day of traffic, and using the exhaust break in the 2022 Accolade, 37K. I had a strange problem. Towing jeep, I use exhaust brake to help slowdown on sudden traffic stops or down hill. Manual, I don’t leave it on. After a very hot day, and numerous uses, I experienced a backfire if you will, on several uses, seems like it was failing… Any thoughts? Really loud bang and vibratrion…

How many miles? Have you tried forcing a DPF filter regen?

With that low of miles, you should not be getting back fires. I would take it to the Freightliner Service center near you while it is under warranty. 3 year/36 on engine and chassis. Might not be anything, but would not take a chance on waiting until it runs out of warranty.

My unit had a transmission leak that lead into other problems, and now I have a decent oil leak that I am going to take it in for next week.

It was more of a mechanical sound. Since the exhaust brake is part of the turbo (from what I can tell) I am going to take it cummins. P.S. I called Cummins, warranty on my engine is 5 years.

I certainly agree with calling Cummins and have them check it out for you.

With that said, you may want to research "Turbo Bark" which occurs most often when the engine is under a high load and full or close to full throttle and then the throttle is suddenly released (instead of slowly). This causes an issue where the intake is under turbo pressure and the pressure has no where to go. (Actually it "normally" does have somewhere to go via the exhaust and the turbo pressure is commonly released via a "wastegate"). I suspect though that turbo bark would be more likely to happen when the exhaust brake is on as the exhaust brake would restrict the intake pressure from going out the exhaust and that the wastegate would not be open. (just thoughts as it is hard to know without hearing the sound and even then???) ~CA

We have a 2024 doing the same exact thing, sounds like the drive shaft broke. 6,000 miles. We are working are way back to Tampa over the next few weeks and will take it in. Please let me know your findings as well

Can one of you post a picture of your exhaust brake button? I have a 2023 and the manual shows it being optional with an icon I do not have, so I assumed I didn't have it installed (like the airbag dumps). If the 2022 and 2024s both have it, I am assuming I do as well and just don't know the icon...thanks in advance for helping with something I should know.

PaulandApril,

Any resolution to your issue? I know you took the coach in for service, but have not heard if you got it fixed.

I believe I have the same issue with mine, so I’m anxious to hear if it’s resolved.

Thanks, Ken

So after multiple days and tries they were unable to duplicate the exhaust break issue. I also went with the tech and tried 10 times with no luck. The only thing different was he said to turn it on before driving. But then we remember that out gmc 1500 wasn’t on the back either. Will test that theory next month. I will say that did a great job on the alignment drives like a dream now. He said Jaco was supposed to do it after the box was put on but didn’t.
