Looking for weekend getaway ideas within 4-6 hour drive from the Memphis area. Last trip was beaver lake in NW Arkansas and next trip will probably be either canoeing the spring river around hardy Arkansas or petit Jean state park in Arkansas...what other places can you reccomend in the surrounding states that would be a short days drive? The kids are about to start back in school so the longer trips are on hold until next summer vacation...lol

I would recommend The Land Of Lakes Tennessee. Lots of nice campgrounds in that area. We stayed at Bumpus Mills COE last year it was great.

Lake Barkley has great fishing and water sport opportunities.

I like Village Creek State Park in Wynne, Arkansas......, beautiful State Park covering a large area and activities for kids. The CG has both electric/water and full hook-up campsites, large sites as well. The "Trail of Tears" also is part of the park.

Electric/water campsite (November 2015):

Full hook-up campsite (April 2016):

I've camped there a number of times over the last couple of years......, and not that far from the Memphis area for a weekender.

I hadn't thought about land between the lakes, great idea!

And I grew up in Wynne Arkansas, village creek was almost in my backyard. I agree, it's beautiful there...the racoons are ravenous though! Lol

Johnson's Shut-in's state park in MO. Fun natural water feature for the kids and several other day trip parks in the area, like Elephant Rock state park.

We just stayed at The Narrows CoE park at Barren Lake about 30 miles from Mammoth Cave Natl Park.
It's a nice small park wit h a great volunteer staff

Lake Catherine near Hot Springs, AR is a nice spot. You could paddle in Lake Catherine or the nearby Lake Hamilton or Ouachita River.

Land between the lakes is great. If you decide to go that way, check out Wildcat Creek Campground on Blood river east of Murray, Ky. Lake front, Blood river is one of the largest tributaries of Kentucky lake. Small campground with great managers and great annual campers. We've been there for 9 years now and love it. They have sites available by the day, week, month, or annual. You can go up 94 and cross Kentucky Lake and you rare in the mid section of LBL with the Elk and Bison range, the homeplace, nature center, planetarium, and lots of other things to do. Not to mention the fishing is off the charts year round.
