A memorable trip

... was browsing old family pictures in search of memories. Quite a few years ago we were camped at Cowan Lake SP (pictured) in SW Ohio.

While relaxing at our site one afternoon two couples came through the CG with a metal detector. We could tell the hobby was new to them and they were having fun with it. They got close enough to our site that we could hear one of them say "Aww it's another tent stake". After they were out of range DW said "Imagine, finding tent stakes in a CG".

A couple of days later a family came in towing a boat. It was heavy in the back with motor and camping gear and when Dad released the hitch the trailer tongue shot up and almost severed a finger. He left for emergency care and we didn't see him again. We left the next morning and his wife told us she wasn't sure they could save his finger.

Two memories, one good and one not good.

Gramd canyon np campground in the 70's. Camper tried to shoo away a bear cub in his cooler. Then he got a helicpter ride after mama bear removed one side of his face.

In the early 80’s we liked to camp at Lawson’s Landing campground, it’s a private campground (on the Pacific Ocean)about 65 miles north of San Francisco. This was a unique campground because you shared it with the owners cows. One morning we were sitting around our fire and there was cow about 30 yards from us. She started mooing like crazy and spinning around in circles. After about minute or so of this out pop a calf. We are city folks so this was quite a surprise for us. The kids still talk about it.

Nice story. That's the kind of post I was hoping for in this thread. With as many of us as there are, and going in every direction, there has to be some interesting and unusual things that happen.

Watch where you step when camping with cows.

Back in 2019 Wapocoma Campground. When river down cows would come across. Campground would us a golf cart to round them up and herd them back across.

Several years ago while camping at Bay Furnace Campground in the UP of Michigan and we hear the unmistakable song of an ice cream truck. Instead of the truck, it was a gentleman on the bicycle towing the ice cream trailer. This past summer he told me it was for sale. I hope someone continues with the business.

Also in that same part of the country we arrived late with our pop up and checked in at the office which was closing. The office was adjacent to what looked like a game room. After setting up we wandered back and saw some folks sitting around and joined them. They had a nice bar in one corner, nice TV, so we ordered beers and grabbed a seat. Had a great time with everyone. It wasn't until we asked for our check we discovered we basically walked into their house. After everyone had a good laugh at our embarrassment they said it happens all the time and they actually enjoy having folks wander in.

I think it’s the unexpected moments like these that really separate camping from camping or any other activity. Considering that it is now to the tent stake incident is so humorous, the finger injury reminds us that that even at the most relaxed trips can turn into a mess. Then it always makes you appreciate the calmer moments when they do occur.

On one of our first few trips with the Pop-up several years ago we arrived a day or two early for the July 4 holiday. Across the way was a single guy in his late 30s or early 40s with a fifth-wheel horse trailer with sleeping quarters in the front.

As afternoon turned to evening a young lady showed up for supper. After cocktails he grilled up something for dinner then more cocktails. As is often the case, as the alcohol flowed voices got louder. We didn't mean to eavesdrop but DW and I couldn't help but hear their conversation. More to the point, hear him pulling out all the stops to get her to join him inside. It made for an entertaining evening while sitting around the campfire.

Being in a pop-up we could still hear everything even after going to bed. But try as he might, other than a couple quick trips inside, presumably for use the facilities, she held fast. They were still going at it when I fell asleep around midnight, but I woke up a couple hours later when I heard her leaving (the truck she was driving needed a new muffler).

We've seen this guy several times over the years and talked with him a couple times, but I could never bring myself to ask him if he was able to score that night.

Lets assume they would both say they had a great outing and are looking forward to their next trip.
