Is there any advantage to spending the extra money for a softstartrv or microair easy start vs buying one of the cheaper models off amazon? Do the name brand ones do a better job?

I don't know, that is a good question.
I tried to buy something from the dealer, who called the manufacture, and Furion said "we don't make one, and if you put one on you can void your warranty" so I sort of stopped there.
But my 15K don't seem to need one starting on my Ford F150 2.4Kw generator. As long as I shut off my internal charger the AC starts fine. And the solar charges enough that for the little time I do boondock right now, I can run that way.
on the modern AC models, one thing that really helps is when you turn them on the internal fan starts first than runs for a couple minutes to sample temperature, then the compressor starts so that lessons the startup load of having both motors start the same time.
My opinion, all air conditioner soft start units on the market pretty much do the same thing, name brand or not. I have three Coleman Mach 8 units and went with the Coleman Mach soft start units. It was less expensive than the Micro Air buf not as cheap as others that are available. The big thing is going to be build quality and warranty/aftermarket support which may be better from the bigger name brand companies. However, with the price tag on some of the less expensive models you wouldn't be out much if there were issues.
I went with the model that has the best customer support. This because I'm not electrically 'handy' and knew if I ran into problems, they'd be there to help and they were, 100% to the end. 5 star customer service at SoftStartRV. Yes, any unit can void your warranty. My plan is to uninstall, if I ever there was a need.
