Axle rating on 27.5RLTS

I'm curious what the weight rating is on the axles on this unit if anybody knows. Also on that note what size are the tires on the 16" upgrade and what are their load rating. I would go look at a dealer if I had one close enough with this unit.

This is the unit I want to order once my MH sells.

Not sure how old yours is but on mine I can still see the sticker with the specs on it. My is a 29.5 BHDS and each axle is rated at 4400.

Sorry I misread your original post. It looks like they both have the same GVWR, so I would think they both have the same axles.

My 2016 27.5 rlts has 4200lb axles I was just under it a couple weeks ago and the sticker was staring me right in the face. For some reason I thought it came with 4400lb axles and was surprised when I saw the sticker say 4200lb. I was certainly a bit dismayed at that.

Thanks for the info. This is not what I wanted to hear. They are making them with the smallest axles they could possibly use. I think I'm leaning more and more towards an Arctic Fox unit.

We are going to be in the Elkhart area this week and I was planning on doing a factory tour. I'll still do that but not hoping for much. I think Jayco makes a good coach but I think they are really cutting them selves short when they make them without a little extra safety capacity.

I wonder why the 29BHDS has 4400# and the 27.5RLTS has 4200# and yet they have the same GVWR. Also when you put 16" tires on it then they want you to run 80PSI in them. With that much pressure they are rated to carry over 3000# for a total of over 12.000# So you have 2 4200# axles for a total capacity of 8400# with over 12,000# capacity tires. If you put that much pressure on the tires the unit will ride like a wagon.

I can attest to this. My 7500lb GVWR trailer came with two 3500lb axles. One already bent. I upgraded them both to 6000lb axles (3 inch beam verses 2 3/8) paired with the original sized spindles and hubs so I could keep my 5-bolt wheels, so apparently they are rated to 5200lb or something like that.

It's pretty disappointing that everything has gone so cheap. I spoke with a tech at a dealer and he said you would never have seen this 15 years ago. At least it's not only fixed but upgraded to something better and it wasn't crazy expensive.

Looking at what axles are under the unit and what it weighs is a very important step in my opinion. I learned that the hard way.

That's the reason I run 65 Lbs. Still plenty of capacity at that pressure and much easier on the wife's fine china.

Now you guys got me wondering if I can read correctly. I definitely got a bit irritated when I read it as I thought it had 4400lb axles on it Going to have to crawl under there again to double check. Taking it out this weekend so will check again when I go hook it up.
Or it could be in 2017 they upped it to the 4400lb guess I will know for sure when I double check it.

Hi Butch,
I have the same 2017 RLTS 27.5 unit and my axles are rated 4400Lbs
I have the stock tires and rims on it. BTW we really like this 5er. It tows great and is really comfortable.

We are heading out to Elkhart in the AM tomorrow. I tried calling the visitor center so we could take a tour on Thursday but all I go is a recording stating their hours, It was 8am to 5PM Eastern time and I was calling them at 400PM eastern. I left a message but did not get a return call. I guess I'll wait to see if I get a call back on Wednesday if we can get a tour or not.

Doesnt the 5th wheel hitch carry part of the trailers weight ? If that is correct then the weight subjected to the axles would be less,

So true Lolead but the trailer gvw is 9950. 20% pin weight is 1990lbs leaves 7960 on the axles a 400lb cushion in my case with 4200lb axles not much. Now if the new ones have 4400lb axles that would be quite a bit better with 840lbs of margin.
Personally I would prefer the axles be able to carry the entire weight same with my tires which they do. Just as a good safety margin may be a bit much but nonetheless that is what I prefer.

I have posted this before- this practice of sizing axle weights to the trailer gvwr less tongue weight is nothing unique to jayco or even travel trailers in general. It is common practice and has been for decades . At work I buy redi-haul equipment trailers..... think high dollar. Every one is built just like our Jaycos with axle weights to match gvwr less tongue. Nothing wrong with it, it's logical.

We have a 2017 27.5RLTS- 4400 lb axles- Loaded ready to go our scaled weight on the axles is 7240. If my math is right we are 1560 lbs. to the good. We love the coach with the 16" Maxxis tires. Go with a 3/4 ton- with our coach & the [2 of us}, hitch, etc; we are running a total payload of 2480 lbs.

So what is the point to go with the 16" tire option if the 15" tires are load range E and rated higher than the axles ?

Are the 15" E rated? On my Eagle TT the 15" are D rated. And some cheapie no-name brand. The 16" upgrade is for E rated Maxxis 8008 tires.

The 2018 model according to the dealer told me the tires where the new Goodyear endurance load range R's. He check the unit they had on the lot.
