We couldn't make our winter trip to Charleston's James Island in December. We have booked for August! Charleston has been on my bucket list since I'm a Civil War buff and have wanted to visit Fort Sumter since it was where it all began. Looking forward to it.

It is a real interesting place. I have also visited Appomattox Courthouse where it ended and several battlefields in between.

My DW and I are also big Civil War buffs. Charleston is definately on our bucket list.

Great! Hope you get there soon! You may have a touch farther drive than us, though. I'm also interested in sightseeing the city. I hear they have a Confederate Civil War museum that we will be checking out although always rooted for the Union. LOL!

Best place to visit. We go every year and stay at James Island. My favorite campground. Just make sure you bring plenty of bug spray, the mosquitos are pretty carnivorous.

The Fort Sumter trip is nice. Also checkout the Yorktown. Downtown Charleston is very nice.

And don't forget to eat Bowens Family Restaurant. It will scare ya when you see it but the food is so GOOD.

Fort Sumter is a must do obviously. But while you are on the Mt Pleasant side of the Charleston Harbor go checkout Fort Moultrie as well. It's a 15 minute drive from Patriot's Point. I enjoyed Fort Moultrie as much or more than Fort Sumter. Enjoy your trip!

Will be at James Island and checking out Charleston in about 4 weeks! Looking forward to it.

My daughter and her husband both graduated from the College of Charleston. We really enjoyed going down to visit them. There is soo much to do. There is a small church by Fort Moultrie where my daughter had her Confirmation. Talk about places to eat.....wow!

It's been a long time since we stayed at Jame Island Park CG. Glad to hear it is still open. I believe that they had just started the holiday lights driving tour around the park. Due to a breakdown, we arrived late at 11:30 PM and parked at the gate. The ranger came by and let us in and took us to the campground and let us check in the next morning.

We were just in Myrtle Beach in July when Arthur went by but didn't have time to drive to Charleston doer a day. I wanted to see the CSS Hunley. Also a lit of DDD (Diners Drive-ins and Dives) food stops in Charleston. Drove by the Glass Onion while passing through Charleston in US 17, but it was closed.

We stayed one year in the KOA west of Charleston where they have the small zoo, but liked James Island better.
