Battery question

as I needed a new battery recently, I upgraded to a Optima yellow top;
I read another thread on here where one guy said he disconnected his while parked, to avoid parasitic draining.

so if I do this, then plug in the trailer to do some work inside, will the inverter kick on & make the battery cables "hot"? should I pull the fuse for the inverter
while the battery is disconnected?

I'll reconnect & plug in the battery 2-3 days prior to going out again to charge it. (of course I'll reinstall the fuse)

also, I wanted to install a disconnect, specifically to disable the electric to the jack, but I noticed it's wired directly to the battery, then there's another wire going into the trailer. Trailer is 2020 Jayflight SLX 8 237RBS

It sounds like you do not have a disconnect switch. They are really easy to add.

As for the tongue jack, they typically are not interrupted by the disconnect switch. But there is no reason you cannot do it. Also their should be inline fuse for the tongue jack. Instead of having it tied to the disconnect switch you could remove the inline fuse between trips which would lock it in place.

As for your normal battery use. I suspect you do not have disconnect switch, but I am going to discuss if you have one as it sounds like you want to add one. Until it is installed pull the inline fuse at the battery and it will kill the parasite power drains.

If your connected to shore power even for a short time doing some work, take advantage, connect your battery and and top it off the charge.

Pending on your TT and battery configuration, the parasite power drains can discharge a battery within a few weeks. Dropping below 12V is unhealthy for a traditional lead acid battery. Try to avoid it, as it will shorten your batteries overall life.

When you add your disconnect switch set it up to disconnects 100% of everything inside the TT. Do not disconnect the e-brake. The tongue jack usually is not on the disconnect switch. It has an inline fuse. You could just remove the fuse to lock it in place if you wish or add it to your disconnect circuit, It still needs an inline fuse.

If I remove my battery from the TT, I always remove my inline fuse at the battery. This keeps the wire from accidently shorting out on the frame and having to replace the fuse in the fuse box which is hard to see and grab.

Happy Camping :campfire:
