Battery Shut Off Switch Wiring

I'm adding a battery cut off switch and ran into a small issue. The ring terminal on the TT side is too small to fit over the post on the switch. I was thinking of just cutting off the ring terminal and wrapping the wire around the post and cinching it down with the nut.

That's not as convenient and a pain if I need to remove the switch temporarily. Has anyone had to deal with this?

I just bought a switch and am about to install it. My plan is to pick up a new terminal at an auto parts store and replace the one on the wire so it will fit the switch terminal. I think that would be more reliable than just wrapping it around the terminal.

Are you finding one that matches the wire gauge? The terminals I found are for larger gauge wire and I'm worried about getting a good connection.

i did a switch for my batteries as well,, I bought large terminals at autozone, the size needed to fit the huge switch posts as well as the trailer side and battery side. I cut insulation on wires long enough to double over the wires to fill the terminal lug. I use a professional terminal crimper, but it can be done with vise grips.. pull test your crimps to make sure they are tight. if one pulls out,, start over with new terminal lug. just my 2 cents

i took a file and made the ring inside diameter larger for mine.

You can go to a battery store and have a lug crimped on to your wire that has the correct size hole for your battery post. Or you can go to an electrical supply house and get a mechanical lug that does the same thing.

Once you get it crimped on a little solder and it will be secure for life

I soldered my connections with bigger rings

Or, you could just get in the habit of pulling the 30 amp battery fuse next to the battery every time you want to disconnect. No tools, solder or parts needed to pull or replace.

Thank you! Pulling the fuse is easy and free. What fun is that? LOL

I took it one step further and replaced the fuse with a 30 amp breaker that is dimensionally identical to the fuse so on the days that the jack is overextended in one direction or the other....no problemo, instant reset and everything in the trailer still works.

I think I would get the proper size ring and do it right.
Lots of amps in a battery, and corrosion where you can't see it can be frustrating.

I bought a terminal crimper on amazon. I made cables for my extra batteries. They work great. You can take a torch and solder a terminal on that fits
