Black and Gray Tanks

I have a 2021 29.5BHDS. It has three gray tanks, and two sewage connectors. Do wee know what grey tank does what? I've heard some people talk about adding valves in-between to increase their capacity.


What are the two sewage ports for? I made the mistake of hooking my dump line to the back sewage port and opened the black valve and nothing came out...and then had a nice mess trying to hook the line to the front one later with the black tank already let loose.



Unfortunately the manual is so broad it's unhelpful.

I just had to figure out which one is which on my two tanks.

I only have a singe sewer port, so both gray tanks are plumbed and run to a single sewer port, along with my black tank.

I just did the test by ensuring all tanks were empty, then adding about 5 gallons of water to the bathroom tank via the sink (or enough to make the tank sensor trigger) then pulled the gray levers, one by one.

I have found that my Jay Feather 22rb has the bathroom gray tank labeled as #1 and the kitchen gray tank as #2.

Sounds like your unit has 2 sewer ports. In most cases the port closest to the toilet is your port to dump black toilet and gray bathroom and the other one your kitchen gray.

I would highly suggest adding dump valves to each of your sewer outlets. They are handy and convenient and can help alleviate an accident. They help contain the inevitable leakage that happens with the standard valves on your camper.

It's a solid $20 (in your case $40) investment.

You have a learning curve when you get a new unit. Once you determine which is which and mark them, there will be other things to learn about your rig.

As other said you will have to test for yourself. Once you do suggest labeling them. Usually the forward gray handle is for the forwardmost gray tank.

My 34G only has the single sewer connection. One Gray and one Black tank. My standard dump valves have always worked fine. Wondering why anyone would install an aftermarket “dump” valve right in front of the standard factory dump valves?

The twist on valves are just in case the other valve is defective or you want to allow the 2 tanks to share each others space in case one fills before you can dump it.

Plus you have to have just about every thing camper with you, just in case?

Sort of a "belt AND suspenders" idea. It can save a lot of grief from a leaky waste valve.

I read somewhere some guys using these valves to join all grey tanks to effectively increase whatever single drains capacity. Sounds like a good idea not sure how easy or foolproof it is. My unit has the thermal barrier so that stuff is all inaccessibile


Maybe my back port is for a grey water then? Although at least one of them is emptying....

Our 29.5 BHDS has two sewer connection outlets the one in the very back is strictly for the outdoor kitchen sink. Ours is a 2015 not sure if newer ones are the same.

You probably have an outside kitchen with a sink, and the rear port is for the 8 gallon grey tank. It has its own gate valve at the rear, and has nothing to do with your main tanks, and valves. I had a 2020 29.5 bhok, and that is similar 5th wheel. Hope that helps you. Ricky T. 355MBQS

I have had the coach valves leak on a couple different RV’s. Not fun when you pull the cap off and it’s the black tank valve leaking which because of TP and the other stuff is the tank most likely to leak. The added valve alleviates that surprise.

Even my new Jay Feather hasd small amount of tank leakage behind the cap, noted during testing with water. I put an external twist on valve before ever using the tanks. Glad I did. It's working out perfectly. I like the added security.

Interestingly enough, my new Pinnacle came with a factory installed dump valve at the sewer hose connection...........was happy to see that as it avoided installing one as a safeguard in the event the tank valves leaked.
