Cape Hatteras camp ground

Has anyone been to Cape Hatteras camp ground? We have reservations there for 3rd week of august, would like to know how it is. I've seen mixed reviews about it. Thanks
 
We stayed at Camp Hatteras in Rodanthe last year. Loved it! We stayed on the "sound" side. It was pretty windy while we were there in May '09 so couldn't go kayaking. The bathroom facilities are nice. Nice clubhouse too. This happens to be one of our membership reciprocal campgrounds, so we only paid $10. The only bummer during our stay was the fact that we didn't have our Jayco yet! :)

What membership do you belong to if you dont mind me asking. I have the Thousand Trail membership. Always looking for better deals and or campgrounds! Thanks in advance

We bought a frozen fee campground back in the early 90's. It came with RPI and Coast to Coast. We camped cross country for 3 years with our kids so we could see all of the lower 48. Having a membership made sense to us, our current/long term situation, and our pocket books back then (camping was $2-$4 a night; now it's $10). Our membership payed itself off quickly (KOA cg's at that time were running $30+ a night and we traveled up to 5 weeks at a time). We added TT over a year ago as we have more of those cg's in California area's that we like to visit most. We found someone online who was looking to get out of his contract and gave it away to us (we had to pay a transfer fee though). :)

Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground

I haven't been to the OBX for almost 10 years, but the times I did go, Camp Hatteras was where I camped. It's expensive, but first class. The Cape Hatteras KOA is in walking distance, just down the street. About the only thing I liked better about it compared to Camp Hatteras was the camp store. There's a small, no frills campground about a mile or so south of both of these campgrounds called Ocean Waves Campground. Historically, this has been an extremely reasonably priced campground, considering the area. You might want to check it out. But, be forewarned, this campground fills up quickly, so don't wait if you already know what dates you want to reserve.

To explore the OBX, I think the above campgrounds are the best, location wise. While they're about 25 miles (north or south) from the beginning of any of the major attractions or shopping areas. the area they're in is one of the least congested on the OBX; especially in the summer vacation season, thus making for a more relaxing, enjoyable stay.

It's very easy when the temperature is in the 80's at night, the humidity is 95% (or higher) and the mosquitos are eating you alive. I can assure you that if you could have a fire, you'd be sitting at least 15 feet away from it.

The OBX can be a rather hostile environment. There's generally not much shade during the day at the OBX. Combining that with high humidity and no A/C (as my old pop-up was), it can be quite unpleasant. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you bring your own shade.

We have a "Little Red Portable Campfire" we purchased at Camping World a couple years ago. It serves us well when we can't do a wood fire. But when we camped at Camp Hatteras in the spring two years ago, the wind was so bad that we didn't bother with a fire :)
 
We did end up going to the Cape Hatteras camp ground in august. I would have repleyed sooner but as soon as we go back my father went into the hospital and its been hectic ever since. but as far as the camp ground it was great and you can do camp fires on he beach. I know its not the same but it pretty cool. he down side is lugging up your wood to the beach. the camp ground was very nice some bath houses were cleaer than others. the staff was really friendly. we stayed on the ocean side in the 1st row along the beach. theonly down side was sites are small. and your close the the campernext to you.
