Carefree Awning Question

I have a Carefree Travel'R 052540-211 patio awning on my 2020 26XD. A couple of weeks ago while we were sitting under it an unexpected strong gust of wind pushed the awning all the way back to its mounting frame and then the wind stopped and it went back very quickly. I decided to retract it because I was concerned about more wind gusts. On rolling it back n, I heard a snapping sound once every revolution until it was in its cradle. And it is still making that noise when retracting. It extends normally with no unusual sounds. I have stopped the retracting about half way had checked the roller spring tension and it seems ok. Is it possible I broke a spring? Is there a way to check it without pulling it so apart?
