We love the convection/microwave in our home and have often thought it would be nice to replace the OTR microwave in our MH with a convection/microwave combo. The gas oven is very small and heats unevenly. Has anybody replaced the High Pointe EM044KIW with a microwave/convection? I started looking into it and there are definitely replacements that look to be virtually drop-in replacements (e.g. RecPro RPM-3). But the cabinet above our microwave is 17" deep and all of them say not to install in a cabinet deeper than 13" to allow sufficient venting from the vents on the top front. When I looked at the install manual that came with the existing microwave, it says the same thing. But it is installed to blow out a rear exterior vent. All of these can be installed the same way. What I don't know is whether or not the RecPro vents only out the rear after reconfiguration or does it also need the top front vents. Does anybody know? Any ideas are welcomed!

I have considered replacement options as well over the years. However, yours could be different but, what already exists in mine and most is a microwave\vent-hood where most replacements (convection\microwaves) do not have a vent hood built-in. In other words the Recpro RPM-3 does not have a range vent-hood feature and is supposed to be installed above an existing range vent-hood. ~CA

(again yours could be different and perhaps you already have a separate range vent hood)

Thanks for the reply, craigav. Are you sure it doesn't have a vent-hood? This link sure makes it look like it does: https://www.recpro.com/rv-microwave...ck-finish-replaces-high-pointe-and-greystone/

If not, the High Pointe HP44ZR (https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Microwaves/High~Pointe/HP44ZR.html) certainly does. But I have the same question about the need for it's top front vents.

No, Actually I am incorrect. (sorry about that) :) When I did a search for the RPM-3 and looked at it I noticed it was mounted above a vent hood and didn't have a vent switch on the panel. However, after you shared your link I realized that my earlier search pulled up a different model.

I tried to find the installation manual but I couldn't find it in regards to the vent being on the top or the rear and that would be what I would want to check in order to be sure.

In the link you shared (for the rpm-3) it does state that "Microwave is defaulted to recirculate, but there are specific instructions in the manual to rotate motor to vent out the back of microwave" but I didn't see any link to the install manual, the user manual that I did find doesn't mention anything related to moving the vent to the rear.

Next time I am in my RV I will measure mine as I would also like a convection \ microwave combo (w\vent hood) and I haven't checked in years but I couldn't find one years back when I did check, perhaps I couldn't find one with the same dimensions I needed as it has been a while since I last checked. ~CA

I found this regarding the High Pointe

The vents in the q&a are the microwave vents at the top front of the oven and not the exhaust vents for the vent hood.

The vents on the top of the High Pointe Over the Range RV Convection Microwave # HP44ZR allow for steam to escape even with the back of the unit being vented out so it's preferred to have the vents clear the cabinet to avoid moisture build up that could potentially ruin the cabinets. With the depth of the microwave being 15" as well you may need to screw a small 1" thick board to the wall framing as a spacer to push the vents out past the bottom of the cabinets.
