coupler lock??

Hey everyone,

I have done some extensive googling on what kind of trailer coupler lock to get for my jay flight 287BHS. The tongue is nearly 5 inches wide so most of these locks come nowhere near fitting. I have ordered the U shaped type as well as the masterlock type and neither fit. Does anyone have a lock that fits?? Or do you just go the wheel lock route? Thanks!

Thanks guys. Here is a picture of my extra wide tongue. Nearly 5" at its widest. I am thinking the first lock option either fits perfectly or does not make the cut. I was also just thinking of wrapping it a bunch of times with a formidable wire which would make it annoying if anyone wanted to hook up to it.

Like the picture above with the Master lock I know someone that took the 2 5/16” ball and cut off the threads so he just had the round ball & stuffed it inside the coupler & locked it in place with plenty of grease.

This is the only one I saw for underslung couplers.

I have one like this (SO. What I like is that the key comes up from the underside so it will be much harder to drill out the lock. With that said, most of these hitch locks are fairly easy to pry off with a long crow bar.

I have considered doing is taking an old trailer ball, cut the post off, and purchase a good coupler lock.

Easy pickens for a bolt cutter. Unfortunately they don't give a very big hole to run a bigger lock in. Might want to consider doing something like this:

With the right tools, anything can be opened quickly. Now that real cordless tools exist it just makes it that much easier.

All you can really do is to hope your method is harder than the thief is willing to work.

This is what I use - a little messy. Every time I lock my coupler, I can't help but wonder, how many trailers are "actually" stolen each year???

I have the Proven Industries lock and love it. Some one would have to work at it for awhile to get this locking device off.

as I understand it they will just loop the chains around the hitch and hook up to the truck, maybe lower the jack and off they go... the lock is moslty for show and to keep the honest person a little more honest today and the mistaken person from hithcing it up leaving.

Probably a lot more than most of us realize. Most travel trailer thefts happen in storage lots or when the trailer is stored in a more remote location.

Did you ever find a lock that works? Just bought a Jayco 27BHB and have the same coupler. Already purchased 2 locks and neither work. Getting frustrated, don’t want to buy a $200+ lock.
