furnace wiring

Purchased a used camper. I noticed these alligator clips on the furnace wiring. Any idea what they are? Are they safe to use? Looks like a bit of carbon laying around as well?

That's a little unusual alright. Did you trace the orange wires on the alligator clips to see what it connects to? Does it go somewhere or is it just a jumper?

It's hard to tell from the photo but could be that it was put in to jumper out a safety to make the furnace work. Like a high temperature or something. Either that or to take power for something else that you may find by tracing the wires.

Looking at an old schematic I have of an Atwood furnace it looks like that Blue wire may be connected to a limit switch. Someone definitely tried to bandaid a problem with that jumper. What model Atwood do you have? I will verify that my diagram is accurate. PM me an email address and I will send you what I have.

model 8535-IV-DCLP I don't know anything about furnace wiring. Can not take rv to dealer/repair. I would have to remove furnace and take alone. Will try to trace the wire today.

Looking at the pictures and the wiring diagram it loos like the sail switch was jumped out.


You can replace the sail switch but I would suggest the you remove the unit and clean the fan blades They tend to get clogged and that is the cause of the sail switch not pulling in when the fan runs. This also causes an excessive amount of heat in the furnace and can lead to the high limit switch failing I would recommend that you clecn the fan blades and replace the sail switch and high limit

I just emailed you the Atwood service manual for your model. I agree with the above advice.

I was looking on my phone last night so looking at the photo a little clearer today and referencing the atwood wiring diagram it looks like several possibilities.

To diagnose you really need to trace the red wire that the alligator clip is on and see if it goes to the motor, the gas valve, or the circuit breaker/on-off switch. If it goes to the gas valve then the advice above should fix it.
