Help..Leaking toilet valve

The flush valve on my toilet must be leaking, when I fill the bowl with water, an hr or two later the bowl is empty. This also obviosly creates at problem with odor when we are not there for a week. Short of having the valve replaced is there a fix out there you have used???

You can use some Vaseline on the rubber gasket in the bowl. It is probably dried out. If this works it will likely be a temporary fix until you can replace the gasket. Perhaps the bowl went dry over the winter and the rubber dried out.

Bend a coat hanger or other heavy wire into an L about 1" long. With the flap open (pump and water off) use the L to clean completely the slide track that the slide operates in. Sometimes a small wad of paper will get lodged in there, and will allow a leak. As others suggested, then use some Vaseline or better yet, a non-petrolium jelly lubricant to lube the seal.

Hold your nose and clean the groove with an old toothbrush, then use a non petroleum lube like plumbers silicone ( Lowes plumbing) to lube it.

The flush valve is a easy part to change out if needed.

Depending on which toilet you have, the flush gasket may be replaceable easily.

If the above cleaning methods don't work for some reason, get a replacement kit for your brand, and model of toilet. We had the exact same problem last year. The kit usually comes with instructions, ball valve seal, floor seal, and some closet bolt shims. Its a very easy repair. Shut off the water, drain off the pressure, disconnect the water line from the back of the toilet, unscrew two nuts from the base, and it comes right out. A couple more screws holding the top from the base, and the ball seal is right there to replace. Coat it with plumbers silicone. Reverse the procedure, put the new seal between the toilet and floor, carefully set it back in place, tighten the nuts (not TOO tight), reconnect the water, re-pressurize to check for leak sand your done. I recall it took less than 45 minutes or so. It was much easier than I thought it would be.

Wasn't certain what it was I replaced mine with but it's a thetford, and one feature I liked about it was the ability to snap in a new flush seal, so you might want to check which toilet you have before removing from floor.
