Complete newbie here

My wife and I are serious about purchasing our first trailer. We went to Camp World today to look and we really liked the jayco 235mbh. The thing is, my 08 Lexus has the towing capacity of 6,500 lbs and the max weight of the Jayco is just of 6,800lbs.

Is this a concern that we need to have and should we be looking at something a little smaller and that weights less?

Again, complete newbie but super excited

Thanks

Welcome from Northern California!! In my option that is way too much trailer for your Lexus. Myself I would be looking for something around 3500 to 4000 pounds. I can almost guarantee that Camping World will tell you that the Lexus will tow it just fine, remember RV salespeople are paid on commission. I would take what they tell you with a grain of salt. If you have your heart set on that trailer I would also be looking for a 3/4 ton truck. Be safe and again welcome to the forum.

THANK YOU! We're doing our research - It a extremely nice trailer but also, I want to be smart about this and above all else, SAFE. What are your thoughts on the Jay Feather Micro 199MBS? We do plan to get a larger rig with better towing capacity in the future when we decide to upgrade, ect is the future. We want to start making good memories with family and friends so we're pretty motivated.

Thanks again!

I really don’t know much about the Jay Feather Micro 199mbs. That being said weight wise I’d be comfortable with it. I think I would start to research the Lexus. Now I know nothing about the car. How many miles on the car ( towing is going to put a strain on the drivetrain )?Will the transmission handle the towing? Will the brake system handle the towing? What kind of shape is your suspension in (front and rear )? Towing is going to change how your tow vehicle handles. These are just some questions that come to mind. Your very smart to do your homework before you buy, there are a lot of folks that haven’t only to realize later that they have made a very expensive mistake. There a lot of very sharp folks on this forum that can give you a lot more information than I can. Be safe and make a lot of good memories with your family.

Cargo carrying capacity -ccc. Tongue weight, hitch weight, wife, kids, dogs, it all adds up fast. Gvw minus vehicle weight equals ccc.
Factory engineers like to boast big towing capacities, reality is 99% run out of ccc first.
