Having worked around LP Gas and have seen training videos I have a very healthy respect for how dangerous LP gas can be. My question, is do you run the refer on LP gas while driving down the road?

Most people do although it is dangerous. Just REMEMBER to shut off the propane before you fill up.. would not want the flame from the fridge to come on while filling up..

I think most folks around here do. It is technically allowable per the manual - it is generally a question of local ordinance or code. There are some jurisdictions where it is not allowed, and generally not allowed in tunnels and the like.

There are some that are concerned if they get in an accident, and rightfully so. In the end, it is a personal decision on what you are comfortable with within the law.

Just a note on running the refer while heading down the road, have the LP system check by a tech each year. A older the RV has great the chance of a problem. Utube has a lots examples of a what a fire looks like and most are older Rvs but not all, some a new! Be safe not sorry!

Guess I'll be the exception. I turned mine "off" while traveling. I found that the freezer stayed frozen (even the ice) and the cooler cold until the next stop. If we stopped for a long time I fired up the genset and turned on the refrig with electrical power. When we arrived at the next stop-over the first thing I did was plug in and set the refrig on electrical power. This seemed to work well.
Driving with the LP turned on just makes me a little nervious.

This is good to know. I have been traveling with my refrig on AUTO which means it is on propane while driving. All of my trips so far are local (2-5 hrs). I have talked to some folks that say you cannot drive the MH through tunnels due to the propane like in Washington/Baltimore. Or is it you cannot with the propane on and running the frig?

Are there other places you cannot drive MH with propane on? How would you know?

I can't imagine having a motorhome and *not* running the fridge going down the road. They are designed to do so. The alternative is to put no food of any kind in the fridge until you get to your destination, then remove (or consume it all) until you get to your next destination. Not practical at all. You could, of course, run the geny going down the road but seriously, kind of overkill.

Count me along with Mr. Copeland because I shut mine off when traveling as well. As long as you keep the frig doors shut, everything seems to be just fine.

If we are not going to be on the road too long, we shut it off. The frig will stay cold for several hours if the door is closed. Ours has actually stayed cold enough for a full day.

Glad it is unlikely I'll ever travel with my trailer to New Jersey or Canada. According to the above posted site - those, and tunnels, are the only places where it is not allowed...
