Modding to a full length Queen Mattress

I am curious to know how many have modified the bed platform to handle a full length queen mattress. We have a TT on order, it comes with an RV mattress, I'm thinking about modding to handle a regular queen mattress instead. Thoughts/Comments???

Assuming you're talking about the 21QB you have on order, I don't see why you couldn't do it. The only thing I would worry about is whether that extra couple inches restricts access to the "street side" of the bed around that bathroom corner.

I thought about doing it to ours, but we couldn't. Then we removed a wall in our trailer, and I think it might be possible again. But it's WAY down on the list of things to do. I like to sleep with my head right up against the headboard, so I actually fit on the bed for the most part. Anyway, it doesn't really bother me.

I wanted to do that in my 28BHS but the walk around would be too close between the wall and the bed.

I did just such a project in my previous MH where the bed was located in a slideout. That meant it could not be permanently left extended otherwise the slide would not close. So I constructed an extension to my bed platform out of 3/4" plywood with 1" x 3" oak boards glued and screwed to the edges. It was made to conform to the end of my bed platform and extend it 5" so the platform was a full 80" long when attached.

It attached to the end of the platform with flush-mount clips that allowed it to be easily lifted up and removed. It was held locked in place by spring-loaded barrel bolts on each end that kept in from being lifted out of the clips unless you meant to remove it. It also had two hinged support legs made also out of 1" x 3" oak boards that made it plenty sturdy enough to sit on the end of the bed. The support legs dropped down and rested on the floor when attached.

I had a local upholstery shop cut me a foam block 60" wide, 5" long, by 10" deep (the size of our mattress' depth). My wife sewed a cotton cover made out of an old sheet for the foam extension. We would place the extension at the head of the bed. We had a mattress cover and when you added regular queen-sized sheets you could not feel it at all under your head.

For travel we would lift the foam extension up, slide the mattress to the headboard, release the two slide bolts on the extension, lift off the extension, and place it at the top of the bed under our pillows to keep it from bouncing around. Two-minute job.

Sorry I don't have any pictures of the completed installation, we sold that RV when we bought our current Seneca. But here is a picture of the barrel bolts and the mounting clips I used for the extension.

You're talking an extra 6" longer than that RV short queen. Looking at your floor plan, you may not have enough space between the bed and the bathroom wall to do that. It also depends on what the bed platform is. Our 23RLSW is a hinged plywood sheet with a storage compartment underneath. So if it's like ours, you would want to replace the plywood with a larger piece. That wouldn't be a big deal, as long as you have the clearance.

No way to do it in our 23RLSW, as that would leave NO clearance between the bed and the bathroom wall.

For that matter, I'm about 6' and don't really have any trouble with the short queen. Just saying.

Without having the TT, I simply do not know how much clearance there is at the foot of the bed. I thought I would pose the question if anyone has completed this modification, I sure hope that this mod would be possible. Instead of purchasing a standard residential mattress, I'll just have to purchase a "real" RV mattress to replace the one that comes with the unit. Thanks everyone!

I just watched a walk-through video on Youtube for that trailer, and I'm not sure there's enough space there for a longer mattress. In fact, it's somewhat tight as it is. If you put a longer mattress there, you wouldn't be able to walk around to that side of the bed.

Of course, watching it in a video, and measuring it in real life can be significantly different, but there certainly is not a surplus of space on that corner by my estimation.

I forgot to mention that we get a little more "bed" because of our topper. We put a 4" thick standard queen sized topper on our short queen, and it gives us a couple inches of "unsupported" mattress length. It's not much, but it might be just enough (it certainly is for us). I'm 5'10", and DW is 5'8". Her feet hang off the end, but she likes to have pillows between her head and the "headboard" (which is the front wall of the trailer). Whereas I sleep with my hair touching the "headboard", and my feet don't hang off.

Mattresses

There has been a good bit of discussion on this subject lately addressing the poor quality of Jayco mattresses that come in your RV. My advice is to sleep on it a few times, then you might want to look at Memory Foam Mattresses from Amazon. Just ordered a 12" Zinus Memory Foam Full for $250.00 for our RV B/R. We just replaced the mattress in our home B/R with a Sleep Inovations Alden 14" Cal King for $629.00 and have slept on it for about a month and we both are very satisified with the comfort and quality. Something to think about. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Someone posted a picture of the inside of a Jayco mattress, it looks nothing like what a residential mattress looks like. The Jayco mattress looked like three horizontal pieces of padding contained in cover.

I modified the platform in my former Whitehawk 27DSRL. Made getting around the bed a little tight but certainly manageable and any inconvenience was well worth the advantage of sleeping on a full size pillowtop mattress from the local furniture store. I am 6'4" and DW is 5'10" so the longer bed was a must.

Most RV manufacturers define that as a burlap bag sewn to the size and shape of a mattress... or sort of... filled with straw...

My White Hawk came with a full 80" queen but the 80" bag of straw only got slept on once. We changed it out with a Perfect Cloud from Amazon and Goodwill got the bag of straw that same afternoon. Sleeps pretty good, and is the same as we have at home.

I did that with my 303 RLS the mattress just slid right in no problems at all. I know others are not that lucky..
