New Garmin GPS RV 1090

I took a look at Basecamp but I couldn't figure it out, so do I plan my trip on the Garmin 785 and then upload it to the Basecamp software?

Basecamp can be rather obtuse at times. It took me a awhile to get it figured out but now it works very well for what I use it for. I use a combination of Google maps and Basecamp to build routes that I can then transfer to my Garmin RV660LMT. You can also transfer tracks acquired on the GPS unit back into Basecamp and use those to create new routes for future use. As we have some trips that we run on a regular basis it's nice to just transfer the route from Basecamp again and go.

Well I’m still learning all of its features, but it works great. My truck doesn’t have Bluetooth or any of the other fancy stuff found on today’s vehicles, but the Garmin has Bluetooth so now I have a hands free phone connection to my cell phone. It also has hands free operation as far a searching for phone numbers, addresses, places, etc. It also has every campground I have searched for and it will show all of the amenities that’s available. Best thing you could do to see all of the features is go to the Garmin website and download the owner’s manual.

The camera takes excellent videos that starts recording as soon as you start the engine.

This is where I mount my RV660LMT - that way the DW can operate it if needed while I'm driving. That is also the same general area that I'm used to looking if I happen to be using the factory NAV when not towing. I mount the Furrion Rear Observation camera monitor to the lower left which makes it easy to take a quick check of that along with the driver side mirrors.

Okay that's confirm it I was thinking about putting it there and when I ask my wife she said the best place is in the lower middle. Thank you sir, I've been playing around with it trying to get familiar with it I also bought a 64gig microSD card for the dam cam and a 32gig for storage for my saved maps and trips.

I have a 32gb microSD in my RV660LMT as well. I initially had trouble getting the card to work as the 660 thought it was too big even though they state 32gb is supported. I ended up having to wipe out and repartition the microSD card at ~31gb before it would recognize it and use it. I also have a 64gb card for my Viofo dash cam and that gets me ~5.5-6 hours of 1080P without audio before it wraps and starts overwriting.

I don't actually keep any of my trips on the GPS unit. Rather, I keep everything in Basecamp and just transfer the routes that I need for any given trip. Once a trip is done I clear it off the GPS unit. I don't like to have a lot of extra clutter in the Saved Places section on the GPS - I like to keep that focused to just what I originally planned. It's easy enough to use the unit for on the fly searching and routing off the planned route.

I mounted mine in the center of the windshield about at the mid point between the dash and roof. It connects to a 12 volt source that stays on for 2 hours after the ignition is turned off. I usually remove it from the mount when I park it while shopping, and especially to keep it out of the hot sun.

I found trying to use Basecamp was a hassle for me. I just go into Trips and quickly add the places I will be going to and save it. I don't use it for local trips, only longer RV trips.

I also go into the camera Gallery and usually format the SD card about once a month to clear unsaved data from the card. When parked in my garage I connect it to my home WiFi and check for updates about once a month I've only had it about 6 months and there have been 2 map updates since I installed it. I have most of it figured out, but it's still a learning process.

I would give your 32gb card a try first and see if it works or if it complains. In my case it was more than just a simple reformat as I had to delete the partition on the card first and recreate it at a slight smaller size. Depending on what your needs are Basecamp may not be the best tool. We like to do a lot of advance planning, and we have some trips that we make regularly so keeping everything in Basecamp makes a lot of sense. I'm a visual person so it's nice to be able to see on the large screen every trip we've taken or planned on taking in a single view. And of course, when the RV660LMT dies, or we decide we need/want an upgraded unit, there is no concern about losing trip or routing details that we've accumulated over the years.

Yes I agree, I'm going to try it again and see if I can work with it, I'm pretty good when it come to tech stuff or working with software it just that I need the patience to get it and if I have patience I will get it.

I find it easiest to create individual Waypoints in Basecamp for my start and end destinations, then identify and add Waypoints for preferred fuel stops. I like to use Google maps to research fuel stops as I find the street view handy to see if the pump layout is going to be accommodating for our setup. After the individual Waypoints have been added then I will create a new route using the start and end destinations. After the route has been created then you can add in the additional Waypoints between the start and end to fill out the route. After you have populated the route you'll notice that for each Waypoint in the route you can set some date/time values such as Departure Date/Time or Stay for XX amount of time. This will provide you an estimate on arrival times at each of the Waypoints in the route. Also note that in the upper right hand corner of the route window there is a pull-down used to define the Activity type. Use that to set the route for RV or RV - Fastest.

One of the features that I've had a lot of trouble with is the Trip Planner. After fiddling with it off and on and coming across some threads on one of the RV forums I did get it to work for me. However, I'd recommend getting comfortable with creating Waypoints and routes first. Then you can create a new List that contains multiple routes - for example - one route from your home to the first destination, then another route from that location to the next destination, and finally one to get you back home. When you go to transfer from Basecamp you just select the desired list and all associated routes along with the individual Waypoints will be sent to the GPS unit.

Below is a screen shot from one of the routes we took on a trip last fall. You can see all the individual Waypoints in the route along with the green track on the map that goes with them. The red track is for another route that was part of the list of routes for that trip.

I use mine to ensure that I have a record of the idiot cutting me off and causing a problem. And on occasion I've saved some footage from some interesting drives to share with others.

We pick up our camper this month and been reading all I can on the Garmin units as well as phone based apps. Somehow it never occurred to me to ask one of my brothers who is a professional truck driver. Two days ago, I woke up to an 18 wheeler parked by the shop at the farm. Yes, about once or twice a year, if his route and load permit, he will pop in and spend a night or two. So I grill him on this stuff, and he has been using the 785 LMT-S, two of them in fact. He keeps them running in different pages all the time. next thing I know he comes back from his truck with one of them in its box. Turns out he has a new 800 something Garmin he is also using and he had boxed one of the older ones that is now mine. I spent a good chunk of time upgrading it online, and now learning how to use it. he already has the unit setup for a big rig, so I should be set as far as height. He also said all he ever uses besides the Garmin is an APP called Trucker Path if anyone is interested. It has fuel stops,weight stations,parking,fuel,truck washes, hotels, Walmarts, rest areas, and I see a pilot and flying J icons as well. There is more, have yet to play with it.

Just finished first trip with Garmin 780 and it was solid. Easy to use and plenty screen. Auto Bluetooth fuel stops what you need wo all the stuff you don't. Have in dash Garmin BT600, didn't even turn it on.
