Hi everyone. I just bought my very first camper: a 2007 Jayco 12 HWS. I wanted to test out the hot water in my backyard so I filled the fresh water tank, ran the pump, cleared the lines of both hot and cold. I then lit the pilot, turned it to the hottest setting and waited 15-20 min. Unfortunately when I turn the hot water on, I am only getting luke warm water. Oddly when i switch from hot to cold, the water will get warm for a split second and go back to luke warm. Now I pulled the plastic plug on the hot water tank 20 minutes after shutting the pilot, and the water in the tank was pretty warm. I searched everywhere for a bypass valve, but no success 🙁 Anyone have any ideas? Im leaving friday on my birthday to go on our first outing with the pop-up 😕 Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forum from Western New York State!

Bypass valves are usually on the rear of the water heater. I've seen some smaller units that didn't come equipped with them, which may be your case.

One other place to check, if you have one, is an outside shower faucet. If the faucets are turned on, and the shower head is off, the cold will mix with the hot, and give the same issue. Just guessing.

I don’t seem to have access to the rear of the hot water tank. I might have to unscrew the wood paneling inside the storage compartment. I’ll check the shower out!

Most bypass valves in trailers are located behind a movable panel. It'll have obvious screws.

Here's a diagram.

Just found the hot water tank behind the panels. It doesn’t have the same bypass setup as your picture, but i’m pretty confident that the bypass was open. Just switched it up now and waiting for the water to heat! 🤞🏻

Hopefully that did it. It may have been partially open giving you hot water then back to warm due to mixing again with the cold. Fingers crossed. Keep us posted.

I found the bypass valves and they were open, letting the cold and hot water mix! I couldn’t figure it out at 2:00 AM and I was getting flustered. Should have just gone to bed and restarted in the morning with a rested mind

Glad it was something simple. Sometimes it just needs a fresh set of "eyes". Thanks for letting us know. Happy trails!
