5500 gas generator Trying to trouble shoot random shut down. Code 36. Generator only has 29 hours on it.

Seen post about overheat so I added metal ducting separating Air intake and air exhaust same problem

Watching again as a generator dies, it appears to be running out of fuel. Verify that by opening the fuel bowl Drain and no fuel was coming out. Seen Lots of posts about bad fuel pumps. So replace fuel pump and fuel filter, same problem.

Any thoughts
Thanks

I had similar problem with mine and I am still not sure what the problem is.
When you press the prime button on gen, you should be able to hear/feel the fuel pump running. If not, then check the in-line fuse for the pump connections as well as the wiring and ground connection. If you have removed the original fuel pump, connect a couple of wires to the connections and a 12 volt battery just to make sure the pump will not run. Check the new fuel pump as well, it's always possible you got a bad one. I had a problem with mine a few days after I bought the MH where it would run for 1-2 minutes and then shut down (not heat related). I was about to take to Onan for warranty work and it started running correctly and has for 3 yrs (128hrs) until my last trip and it started shutting down again after 1-2 minutes and would not re-start for a couple of hrs. When I got home to troubleshoot, fuse and wiring looked ok, and I'm pretty sure I pressed the prime button and don't remember hearing the pump run, but I had already decided to replace pump and filter so I removed them. While trying to decide whether to buy the $250 OEM or $40 replacement, I hooked it up directly to a 12V battery and it ran. I then hooked it back up to the gen (without mounting it underneath) and the gen started and ran correctly. I replaced the filter anyway and re-installed and I have ran the gen several times for 15-30 min since with no problems. I bought the $40 pump for a backup just in case, but time will tell. Like I said, I really don't have an answer, but maybe my experience will give you some ideas. Let us know how you resolve your issue :)

Fuel is good 6 to 8 weeks max.
The only true hours on it is me running it once a month never really ran it more.than 30 minutes.
Was have only camped at site with plug ins no Gen needed. It wasn't until I tried To run the generator while driving because of the outside temperature and trying to keep the kids cool in the back.

Do as CAG suggested. If still doing it, pull the fuel line off the carb bowl and fill the bowl with Seafoam. Crank it a few seconds and let it sit for half hour. Then hit the prime button for gas, and get it to start. See if it’s better.

On my next test I pulled off the line From.
The fuel pump to the carburetor, then hook a clear line from the fuel pump to a bottle. Push the prime button. Filled up a 12 oz bottle within 20 seconds. The clear line does appear to have air as it is flowing but when i pinch the line it fills up solid. Non the less it looks to have plenty of fuel.So I would be assuming possibly float or the needle and seat to the carburetor fuel bowl are not working properly. Anyone ever have problems with that

Gasoline is blended to be stored for at least one year.
Not with alcohol in it. In small engines with carb, 3 months is very questionable. If you need proof, I can get you a link to some proof. A car with injection is way more forgiving and may be a year. Gasoline with no alcohol lasts longer too.

Welcome to the forum, Builder-

You mentioned Onan failure while driving …… when needing additional AC for comfort in the coach. Over the years there have been many, many posts which echo your experience; many of those have been thought to be caused by vapor lock. Just a few comments on my ‘sperience…..so far. If you are getting the code 36 while troubleshooting a "cool" generator none of this rambling below would apply.

I bought my low-mileage coach used. From day one, the Onan would quit, under moderate load, if the ambient temp was 90 degrees or more. I installed the “scoop” from Jayco that channels/isolates the incoming cooling air ....... bringing it from the side of the coach, vice underneath + a metal vane assy from Cummins that diverts the heated air exiting the engine toward the rear of the coach. After those mods, I was able to run the Onan powering both AC’s (in the storage lot) at 95 degrees ambient air temp. Then last summer my daughter and grand daughter had the Onan quit whilst returning from Canada….at 100 degrees in Miles City, MT. (I was not along so I don’t know if the carb bowl was empty or not.)

During the off season I relocated the pump/filter and did a fair amount of insulating. We are now toward the end of a 7K-mile trip (mostly across cool Canada) and will be in Moab in about 10 days; the temp is supposed to be about 100 there, so I will have another data point. At some point along the way I will run the Onan with both the AC’s running (at 100 degrees, hopefully) and see if I am making any headway.

I plan to post a description of my mods with lots of pics later …... IF it shows improvement. For now I will attach a few overview pics that might be of interest. Probably have to click on them to enlarge for the annotation.

Good luck with the fix on yours. Lots of us folks are pretty ticked that we have to be “rowing alone” to have a generator that runs ……… when we need it most.

Best……………………… Ed S.

While looking into this problem and before doing any troubleshooting I found the attached TSB from Jayco. I can't take credit for discovering this and don't know if it really fixes anything as I haven't tackled my own Onan yet, but it might be worth investigating. My plan if this looks to be my problem is to buy some commercial fuel line insulation instead of risking a trip to the dealership. In my case, the genny runs fine for a couple of hours while underway and then dies. When the coach is stationary it hasn't shut down at all.

Had a similar problem. I previously posted the following:
Happened to me in my new Precept. Took it into Onan for service....they said they "couldn't reproduce the problem". Went away on a trip.. generator cuts out after a few minutes and throws the useless 36 code. Searched this forum and decided to change the gas filter. When I got under and began to remove the old filter, I found IT WAS LOOSE! Replaced it anyway, nice and tight, and now the generator runs great.

Wow - thank you for posting this!!!
If you find a link to some insulation, I'd be grateful if you share it here too.

Thank you!
