A couple of months ago, I was researching what 50a surge suppressor I wanted for my new 5'er. After reading everyone's comments and reviews, instead of just a surge suppressor, I went with the Progressive EMS HW50C. To date, it's worked flawlessly!

Today we set-up dry camping for the first time this year, and I fired-up the generator for the first time. We got an error code.... Yuk!!!!!!

So I called Progressive's customer service, and the person who actually answered the phone was the person who helped me! Not only DIDN'T he try to sell me the part that he said was on their website, he told me EXACTLY what to buy at the local Home Depot (only three miles from the State Park that I'm in), and within 45 minutes, I was functioning again!

You may pay a few dollars more foe a Progressive system, than some of the others, but with this kind of Customer Service, it's WELL worth it!!!!

I just ordered the 30 amp system. What part did you need from Home Depot to be able to use generator power?

I'm so glad I saw this post, since I hooked up my EMS-HW50C it has completely escaped my mind that I need an adapter for my honda generator to work with it.

The adapter in question is here, but one could go to a local home store and wire one up just as easily without waiting on mail order:

To use the EMS with a generator you need a plug to tie neutral and ground together. Progressive sells the plug on their site --> Progressive Industries RV Surge and Electrical Protection industry lea

but if your handy with electrical things you can make your own for cheaper....

I needed a $2.99 male cord plug, plus about 8" of 12ga wire ( which the guy who cut it REFUSED to tag, and just jammed in my pocket!). Connect the neutral leg to the ground leg, plug into the second outlet on the generator, and it "tricks" the EMS into believing that it's a completely grounded system.

I made the neutral bond myself and use it with my 2 Honda's. Works perfectly.

Just got my Progressive Industries SSP 30XL in the mail today. I went with this one mostly because of the great reviews on the forum. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow.

That's a good surge protector but won't provide as much protection as the Progressive Industries EMS-PT30c....

Where do you hardwire the Progressive

I hard wired mine in my rear storage compartment under my lower bunk and ran the remote display right into my trailer. It was where the junction box of my incoming 30 amp service and the house wiring was located so it made sense to me. I basically just eliminated the junction box and replaced it with the EMS. That was of course after moving it to a much better location - specifically one that was not directly under a water valve!

Just a note... a person with a pair of wire cutters and a spare 3-prong power cord need not buy anything at all.

I took an older computer power cable, cut it off a few inches from the 3-prong connector, spliced the neutral and ground together, then tied the wires off with wire caps and wrapped it all in tape so nothing would come apart.

Hooked up my 2 Honda generators to the trailer for the first time yesterday, worked like a charm.

I love turning gasoline into cold air...

I simply put mine in the rear storage where the 50A cable enters the trailer.

I didn't even bother to mount it, really. With the 50A wires going in and out of it, it's not moving much anyway.

I do recommend NOT cutting the existing 50A cable, just disconnect it from the receptacle and use NEW 50A cable between the EMS and the receptacle. There was barely enough wire for my install and it was a serious pain in the neck due to the short lengths I left myself with.

Where do you hardwire the Progressive

I unscrewed and slid the fuse panel /power converter out, and installed the EMS in the dead space behind the converter.

X2 on Fire_Instructor. Put mine behind the fuse panel/power converter.

It's going to depend on the model and year of your RV - each floorplan is different.

Mine is in the cord compartment. Safe and sound tucked up behind my connections for sat and cable.

Why does a person need a surge protector when running the Honda EU2000i and companion? They are supposed to be inverter type generators, therefore safe for electronics. I do agree that protection is needed on shore power. We are looking into a surge protector now for power when we are hooked up in a campground.

I've wondered that too, but since I didn't hardwire mine into the RV I get to choose when it's used. I use my portable EMS with shore power and not with genny.

I echo the positive comments about Progressive’s customer service. I called on a Sunday afternoon and left a message. Got a call-back in about an hour.
Great product, great service. Worth the price!
