I keep getting an alert when I come to the forum here telling me I have a message.when I click on it I get another message that i NEED "SPECIAL" stuff to read the messages.Do I or dont I?

I got that too when I first joined and made the mistake of loading the "SPECIAL" stuff - IMO don't do it!!! Loaded a bunch of garbage - thankfully not malware - that impacted my machines performance and took me a while to find and get rid of. To make matters worse, there wasn't a message...

Are you referring to the ad banner at the top of most pages? If you have a legitimate notification, it will show up at the very top of the page where it says

Welcome>user_name>Notifications>My Profile>Settings>Register>Log Out

The ad banner on mine right now has an envelope with an red exclamation and a big box that says "Urgent Message". This is not part of the site's messaging and is in fact an advertisement for something that will likely infect your computer to its very core with something you don't want or need.

That`s an annoying ad that has been discussed by staff here. It looks like its part of the forum and suggests you need to click on it to view PM`s. Its NOT part of the forum!

It is annoying and almost fooled me once. Thanks for reminding me of Adblocker. Put it on my new notebook and it's not distracting anymore.

It's very annoying and did fool me once. A bigger issue than the annoyance is living in a society where deception and trickery is considered good business.

I have been using AdBlocker Plus for several years. Ads are virtually non-existent. I also have pop-ups blocked. I also use NoScript which prevents sites from running any scripts unless you specifically approve it or white list the site.

This is what one of them looks like:

Crabman, ads can be blocked from showing from an option in the Adsense user control panel. I block certain ads from showing on my websites. Maybe whoever controls the Adsense account could do this for the forum, before too many people install adblocker. :)

SmokerBill, Forgive me if I misunderstood you, but why would you not want anyone to install adblocker?

The ad did not fool me.
I would not install or use an ad blocker. Strange you say, and I say its what makes sites free!
And it would just be a matter of time before they would compute a way around

it would be much better if the site Admin had the ability to choose what ads run...

Ads are just another necessary evil

I will notify admin about this, already have about the ad itself. I have no access to the inner bowels of the super top secret admin control panel! (and do not want it)

Generally - Allowing ads are what help the forum / website owners pay the bills and keep the service free. Website owners don't endorse or control the ads - or even benefit from the "clicks".... they only benefit from from letting ad producers use space.
