Has anyone installed a rear view camera (not a back up camera) on their Class C motorhome? We are looking at a couple of options of ones installed on 18 wheelers and would appreciate any input from those who have already installed a rear view camera. Thanks.

On the old coach, I did the $70 wireless Chinese knockoff from eBay. It worked OK. Not great, but good enough and was certainly 1/4th the price of anything in Camping World.

If you can string wires, then know that wired always beats wireless for quality of video. If you have to go wireless, then there are a few things that can hamper the video signal. That's why I tried a cheap investment first. I'd rather lose $70 than $250.

I installed a camera on back edge of roof line that is on all the time when driving and gives a excellent view of the road and traffic behind me. I probably depend on it more than the side mirrors. I have used a camera like this for more than 10 years some 9 yrs on a 5th wheel. The regular backup camera is mounted to view only a few yds behind you and when backing up but for me it is extremely important to know the traffic behind on the road and to be able to see when someone is merging from left or right. It is very simple to install this type of camera and keep on all the time so that you always are able to see who and what is behind. The camera cost can be low or high dependind on the resolution you want such as determing what kind of vehicle is on the road, chevy, ford, ro be able to even read a license plate when close. etc at some distance.

XMTraveler, thank you for your input. I agree it is important to be able to see what is behind you. In our cars we are constantly looking at the rear view mirror and find it challenging not having it in our motor home.

Well I would be lost without the camera view. So often on the highway sometimes a vehicle is coming out from behind you and there is a blind spot in the side mirrors. In this way I always know what is behind and I am able to see when the vehicle starts around to pass or whatever. Because the lens is wide angle I am able to see across the highway in other lanes. This particular camera also is equipped with night vision and it is incredible what you are able to see at night traveling through a congested area at night, The camera appears to turn on some kind of light in the background. Any I have included a couple of photo to show what I have done. Where you choose to mount the camera and monitor is personal preface but I placed on the roof line to reduce the road spray from the 18 wheelers. You can see I am looking at the monitor mounted just above dash at all times.

XMTraveler, once again thank you. The rear view camera set up you are showing looks very similar to the one we are considering. One quick question, what brand of rear view camera did you purchase?

I purchased from Roscoe Camera and they are in New York. You can just go to their website I think www.roscoecamera.com or goole it and find them. I purchased it some years ago and had it on my 5th wheel and removed it prior to selling. Roscoe Camera is a supplier of commercial cameras for vehicles. I think any good camera from anywhere will work as well but Roscoe provides wiring diagrams and the technical specifications of the camera and monitor and they also have connectors on end of camera and monitor for direct hook up without doing a lot of splicing, makes it simple to hook up. Their cost is somewhat higher but it works great.
