:help: We cannot believe that we are looking for a new mattress. We have only slept in our new 2018 White Hawk for 6 nights and the mattress has sunk almost to the platform. We read the older thread about the poor quality of the mattresses that Jayco installs, so we want to buy a serviceable replacement and not repeat Jayco's mistake.

BTW, my spouse and I prefer a firm mattress, no pillow top recommendations, please. Your help is greatly appreciated. And our trailer will take a regulation 60 X 80 queen.

We replaced the stock mattress after the first couple of trips in our 325bhqs with a sleep number queen. It was a great decision. The sleep number, while not cheap, is super comfy and we can adjust each side how we like it.

Check Costco (both online and in the store) for gel mattress toppers and full mattresses. Our mattress was horrible (only slept on it 1 trip) and purchased the gel topper from Costco. I sleep better in the 5er than I do at home...I keep trying to get the DW to buy one for the house bed!

Thank You for Responding

There may not be hope for us. The one thing we both agree about is mattress firmness. Seems not to be a smart use of money to buy a mattress with adjustable firmness and have both sides on the same setting. Just the thoughts of sleeping on gel makes me shiver, but my spouse might like it.

I appreciate your replies very much. we haven't found an extra firm queen that is suitable for a platform bed anywhere we have looked so far.

Don't waste your money on a topper, its like putting perfume on a pig, its still a pig. Depends on what you want to spend, lots of selections on Amazon for firm memory foam mattresses, and if you don't like it free return shipping. Or just do a Google search for RV mattresses and do some research.

Thank you Sundancer

We have looked on Amazon, but the all of the RV mattresses are the short queen and we need a standard queen. If we see firm or extra firm, the mattress has a pillow top, or the foam is "cool" foam.

We had high hopes for the Simmons that came as original equipment. We have a firm, non-pillow top Beautyrest by Simmons at home that we are very satisfied with. Guess we were just very lucky on that one.

Here is a YouTube clip I just recently watched regarding mattress upgrades. I hope it helps.

Thank you for the video

Blaine,

Thank you for the video. I thought that we might want memory foam, but now I realize that we wouldn't be happy. We want a firm mattress that we sleep on and not in, so memory foam is not the answer for us.

Thanks for helping us narrow our focus.

Why not just go to a mattress store and buy one? You said you have a std queen size? There is no reason to buy an RV specific mattress. The only difference with be weight. We had a little harder time lifting the mattress platform to get to underbed storage but it was worth it.

Great Explaination

vcbice,

Thank you for clarifying what an RV mattress is. :) We would love to have a mattress as close to our home mattress as possible. While our unit is at the dealer for warranty work this week, we will go mattress shopping and try to stay as close as possible to RV thickness, but taller shouldn't be a problem.

Go check out a Tempurpedic - they make an extra firm (we have one) and we had it modified to fit our RV-King size.

Ironically... We have a Sleep Number in the house... Last week, I found that Stacy was sleeping in the Motorhome on the Tempurpedic three nights that week.

The only problem with the tempurpedic and similar memory foam is the weight. If you have a bed that has to lifted to access storage it causes problems. BTDT.

But, if you have drawers under your bed lifting is not an issue.

All RV mattress's are not as good as the ones meant for stick homes so just buy the one you sleep on at home. Take the mattress in your bed at home less the box spring and put it into the RV. Then buy the same mattress less the box spring for your home.

This way you will have the same mattress in both places. When it comes to comfort why skimp.

Brentwood 11" memory gel from Amazon. They make short and regular queen sizes. We like it so much, I bought one for the house. The reviews are stellar.

Tom, You live near the RV capital of the world. There are a lot of companies that make custom made mattresses for RVs. They can help you understand all the options you have at an affordable price. We got ours at Elkhart Mattress, in Elkhart, for about $ 550. Took 3 days to make. Meanwhile, we spent 3 days exploring Shipshewana. Good Luck and happy napping :)

We lift it... yes it is heavier than the one Jayco put in, but anything with quality would be!

We don't store things we need everyday in the under bed storage.

Hello Everyone,

We found a mattress today that was everything we were looking for: standard queen, 10" height, firm, no pillow top, no eurotop, no gel and a 10 year guarantee. Yes, we would love to have a clone of our home mattress, but it is 13" high and since we do use the underbed storage, we thought that much height/weight may stress the hydraulic lifts. 10" give us more mattress than we had, and given our age, we may not be able to camp in 10 years for a longer warranty to make sense.

The mattress in our last camper was 3 years old and looked new at trade-in. We are saying "duh" not to have found the maker for that mattress, as it would be likely a company in Indiana, as we are.

Our dealer told us that we traded-in a "Volkswagon" for a "Lexus." However, there are times we wish we had our "Volkswagon" back, as replacing a mattress in one month of purchase is the last of long line of issues we are in process of resolving.

This forum is our lifeline though this experience.

Thanks again,

Tom, sounds like the mattress im looking for. If you dont mind could you post or PM me the brand mattress you purchased. I have found the same flaws as you with the queen mattress that came with my 2017 27BHS after 4 nights. Thanks, dennis

Ditto!

TomR, please post the mattress brand, source, etc!

When the DW gives the word, we'll be getting a replacement. We're using a topper we already had to make the bed 'usable' for now.
