Anyone have problems with replacement regulators not fitting?? My regulator was leaking so I bought the highest rated one on amazon, and a 3/8" brass coupler to connect to hose. Come to find out that my propane hose is 7/8" or so. All regulators that I can find are 3/8", but I cannot find a brass connector adaptor going from 7/8" to 3/8". The standard seems to be 3/8". Anyone else have this problem? THX

Not the pigtails, the outlet supply hose that connects to bottom of the regulator. As you can see by the photos, my outlet hose is measuring a bit over 7/8", but I can't find any adaptors to 3/8"

Just FYI, keep in mind on your image you stated 78 hundredths of an inch which is not 7/8 of an inch. In any case, the threads are 3/4" which is very close to 78 hundredths for a 1/2" fitting.

What Grumpy said is what I would suggest as well. ~CA

Wow that chart is so helpful! So apparently I need a 5/8" to 3/8" since I was measuring near 7/8". I wonder why your stock regulators and all replacements are 3/8" but I have a 5/8"? Does more girth in the hose give you better gas flow?

When naming the photos it won't let you use / or " so that's why I did 78ths, I forgot that it meant hundredths!!

Thanks a ton for all the help!

Bring all your stuff to the local Ace or True Value, and they should be able to hook you up with the right adapters. Very likely, you'd get a 5/8 male to 3/8 female brass adapter...no gas fittings (per se) required. That adapter is likely to be a short adapter with the female thread inside of the male thread. Be sure to use the proper teflon tape rated for propane.

Was the origional fitting in the old regulator a flare fitting? I would think it would be a pipe thread. Your picture of the new regulator the plastic plug in it says 3/8" which I would take to be 3/8"pipe and what ever size flare fitting the hose has.

Does "flare" mean that tapered angled ramp on the tip? If so then I think yes it's flared fitting. Apparently I need a 5/8" to 3/8" brass fitting connector.

The regulator has pipe thread often referred to as MIP or FIP for male or female pipe thread. The tapered end of the fitting is flare. Do not try to get the fitting in this picture to work in the regulator. My brother-in-law burnt their camper to the ground doing that. Fortunately they weren't at the camper when it happened.

The plastic plug in the new regulator says 3/8 so that's almost certainly 3/8 pipe thread. Bring the old regulator with the fitting or just that fitting and the new regulator to a hardware store. It looks to me you need a 1/2" flare x 3/8" male adapter. Best of luck.

Make sure to test your propane detector to be sure it’s in working order.
It’s a good idea to spray some soapy water on to the fittings you worked on with the tank valves open to check for leaks.

"So why not remove the adapter from the old regulator and reuse it?"

What I'm wondering.

Looks to me to be a different outlet size on the regulator.

Perhaps I'm not understanding something, but then maybe returning the one he bought and getting one with the correct size outlet? Any one I've replaced over the years was a standard size. I've never had to search for any different adapters.

In general I suspect it'd be easier to find the correct adapter at a local hardware store than to replace a regulator and source one that matches the adapter you have in hand.

that's not a location that I've ever seen a flare fitting used. They go into the high pressure female of the tank, not between the regulator and the hose.

Seems he's having issues doing that.
