Freshly retired and ready for our first long road trip! We're rolling from Oregon up to Regina Saskatchewan, over the prairies and by the lakes to visit Montreal, Toronto and Quebec city. After that, we roll south by Niagara, stop in Wisconsin to visit friends, head over to Glacier Ntl Park, then mosey home. No set timeline, just roll when we're ready to explore the next find.
Segue into my question: We just got home from a short trip to Vancouver Canada. On the way up, we got a late start and looked for a place to crash for the night. We passed multiple full rest areas, found a rest area that was closed from midnight to 8AM (no sleeping there!), and finally found a rest area that had a spot. In the morning, we got a knock and a friendly guy sheepishly told us that the state rest area was closed to RV'ers sleeping overnight. (Oddly, car camping was still OK. He said they had a problem with homeless trying to set up permanent RV housing.
I come from a family that grew up RVing. When my parents were still out and about, just about every Wallmart, grocery and mall had free spaces for sleeping. Rest Areas always had room. There was just about always a place you could find to crash for the night. On this last short trip, it seems like that window has closed on the RV scene.
I found the RV Parky app, and saw quite a few more in the app store. So down to the question; For long road trips, where can you find spots to pull in late, sleep and leave early these days? Anyone with info for the Highway 1 in Canada, or the northern route across the US would be much appreciated.
