Slide out canopy

Since buying my 28BHBE, I've noticed several other companies offer a canopy that opens with the slide out.
What is the specific purpose, and is it something I need to look at adding?

It keeps you from having to sweep-off the top of the slide when you retract it. Without the awning, or sweeping, you will get leaves, twigs, bird-doo, etc into the top seal, and inside the unit.

Oh awesome.... And without having a ladder to access the top, that'll be fun
