Smoke Alarm and Slide Out

Had something happen this weekend and I thought I would make everyone aware.

Jayco mounted the smoke alarm above the slide out. When my slide out is retracted (pulled inside the trailer) the smoke alarm is hidden by the slide out inside frame.
We always check everything around the slide out before extending it to make sure nothing is going to catch on it. We even stand outside with the remote to make sure it will not hit anything.
AS my son was extending the slide out and it was 3/4 of the way out he heard something that didn't sound right so he stopped. Ran inside and looked around. Crawled up into his bunk and looked down the roof of the slide out and saw the smoke detector jammed under the rubber seals. We tried retracting the slide but the smoke detector was really jammed in there and I didn't want to tear the rubber roof. Fortunately my son is small enough to fit between the ceiling of the trailer and the slide out roof inside the trailer. I went out on the roof and with much very careful pushing and tugging, we were able to get the smoke alarm out.
After looking the slide out roof over very carefully, we did find where the smoke alarm did cause a small tear in the slide out roof rubber material, BUT, fortunately it is inside the outside rubber seal. Most likely will put some Dura bond tape over the tear.

So...... Check what is on the ceiling above the slide out roof when it is retracted.

BIL had a similar incident with his FW slide.

He was extending his slide and suddenly heard a "crunching" sound just before the slide was fully extended. Found that the lens cover from one of the flush mount ceiling LED lights popped-off onto the slide roof during transit.

Bob :)

Yup. Except for the tear in the seal, we've had the same issue. Our smoke detector has made more than one trip outside on top of the slide. Once, while embedded in the seal and virtually outside, it went off briefly. We and several of our neighbors in the CG were wandering outside trying see whose alarm went off... and WHY!

Now we take the smoke detector down and put it in a drawer before bringing in the slide and put it back on the ceiling when the slide goes out. Re-positioning the ceiling screws is on my 'to-do someday' list.
