Smokey Mountain Area campgrounds

Have visited the Smoky mtn np several times and stayed at one of the park CG's everytime but once. Go to the area to relax in the mountains and do a couple of trails. Go into Gburg or PF as little as possible and have discovered access roads that allow you to avoid the town stuff as much as possible. Prefer the Tounson [sp] entry point and have eaten in several of the few eateries in the area.

Wife and I just are not interested in crowds, cotton candy, junk shops, cheezy tourist traps and traffic that are the mainstay of Gburg and PF. No offense to those who seek out that stuff, but we go to the Smokies for the mountain experience. There are several CG's in the park but none have hookups.

We were in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area this past June. Like others have said the Smoky Mountain National Park is awesome, but you can keep the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg areas unless you like endless mini-golf, t-shirt shops, pancake houses, etc.

We stayed in River Plantation RV Resort. Not sure why they call it a resort. I was not impressed. We did check out the other private RV parks in the area and wasn't impressed with the others.

Next time we visit the Smoky Mountain NP we will look at campgrounds on the North Carolina side.

I too don't understand a CG that looks like the middle of a parking lot in town. SMPRV park is much more like what camping was like when I was a kit and still accommodates 45' RV's. It backs up to the park and there are trail right there.
