So the Dealership Called Today…

Update.

Warranty still denied. However the dealership appealed and the matter has moved to “Manufacturer's Review” whatever that means. The camper has sat at the dealership now since mid-July. I will cut the dealership some slack as they have indicated that regardless of Jayco’s final decision, they will cover the warranty. The cost of the repair is approximately $5k.

If anyone from the factory follows this forum, let the powers that be know that Jayco is a joke. And yes this is an industry wide problem.

When the unit comes home I will be “renovating” it to ensure it’s structurally, functionally, and cosmetically sound.

I am so sorry to read that you are dealing with this problem. What makes it worse is that like others you do not get to use your camper that you spent good money for , with the anticipation that your unit will be intack and usable.

It really is frustrating that rv owners loose so much time of being out in the woods or on the highways with new or somewhat new units as they sit idle on dealer lots. When they are sitting, they are also not being taken care of, and further declines in value and quality.

They don’t stand behind their products. Jayco is gone, just another Thor junk product. Jayco stated they quality inspect ALL rv’s before they are sold. Ray Charles could see that doesn’t happen. No offense to Ray .

The unit sat on the dealer's lot for a year, who knows what happened while it was there? Cap manufacturer said it was damaged, not defective.

It seems the dealer is saying that they will make the the necessary repairs not relying on approval from Jayco. If that is true then why not do the repairs now and wait to get reimbursed from Jayco? If the question is is this a warranty problem or from damage that happened after delivery perhaps comprehensive insurance would cover the repairs.

I agree. It would have been leaking the whole time it was on the lot if it left the factory that way, not just after the first time it was used. Something just doesn't add up..

The cap is not damaged. The exterior of the cap is pristine. The interior of the cap is spider cracking. Altec/Jayco denied the warranty claim suggesting blunt force trauma caused the cracking. Exterior blunt force would have left an external indication. So either the cap was damaged on installation or it was defective from day one. No damage occurred on the one night I used the unit, if that is the inference. It is not yet clear if it has been leaking since day one.

If I am reading correctly and looking at your model rig online, Is the front window cut out at the manufacturer, or cut out by Jayco. I take it that if its fiberglass the cap is made in a mold. Question? So if the window was cut out after it left the manufacturer, its possible that some splintering took place. Just a thought, I work extensively with fiberglass and inspected my own window for reference. I know that some of the front windows do leak for a variety of reasons, one being the shape creating some leaking from the lack of bonding of the glue overtime too.

The cap is not damaged.

You posted earlier that Altec said it was damaged and not defective, that is what I based my comments on.

My other comment was not directed at you, but the dealer. Taking it off the lot would not be enough for it to start leaking. If defective from the factory it would have been leaking the entire time it sat on their lot.

I have some thoughts on why you’re having water infiltration. If the outside of the cap is pristine then water is not getting through the pristine surface. It is more likely entering through seams where different parts meet. It could be condensation, improper insulation or caulking. I have two switches for lights on the bottom surface of my cap. The lights stopped working. When I removed the switches water poured out. Water was collecting in the bottom of the cap. I read about a myriad of reasons why water was entering. I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the bottom of the leading edge of the cap to let the water out. Car doors have “weep holes”underneath for this purpose. It solved my problem. I doubt water is entering from cracks in backside of the cap. It’s just my thoughts with the very limited information I have.

Thanks but the water was coming in from the top of the window in the cap. You are right about those two switches on the underside of the cap. Both of mine were wet and didn’t work but Jayco fixed them.

Altec claimed damaged based on photos sent by the dealer. Jayco sided with Altec even with the dealer insisting the cap was not “damaged”. I tend to believe the guy looking at the cap rather than somebody 2000 miles away looking at a polaroid.

How well do you know the dealer? If they had an opportunity to have someone else cover a repair bill, under warranty, for something they created, would they do it? . If it didn't sit on their lot for a year, or whatever time it was, I wouldn't be so skeptical.

Just asking, because it happens.

So 8 weeks later, Jayco has approved the warranty repair and has indicated that it is defective and not damaged. Sort of good news and good on them for finally stepping up to the plate to do the right thing. Bad on them for taking two months and ending our camping season in the middle of July. I also finally got the scoop on what was wrong. There were multiple spider-cracks 360 degrees around the front window in the cap. The cracks were allowing the water intrusion and would likely have grown as the rolling earthquake rumbled down our highways. The cap will be repaired and silicone will also be added against the back side of the window where the cap and the window meet.

At a higher level, we want to star full timing in 2025 or 2026. But if we were full timing this year we would have been scrambling for a place to live for three months. makes us think about our long term plans….
