Just bought a new Jayco 2025 5th Wheel. It seems that a lot of the newer RV's come with tankless hot water heaters. We've never had one in our previous RV's. We boondock about 70% of the time. Other than the usual water saving techniques for boondocking, does anyone have any other thoughts or ideas on saving water while waiting for the water to be hot enough for showers or doing dishes? :)

Odds are you will end up hating that water heater. I sure did. It is not the best solution when boondocking as you will quickly find out. It wastes a lot of water plus fills up your gray tank quicker than you would like.

Here is a link to my observations and remedy which consisted of putting in a tank model which I simply love.

We do limited boondocking but enjoy our Furrion tankless. Always have hot water and no issues at all. I replaced our traditional with the tankless and wouldn't switch back.

We took love our tankless but we too do little boondocking. I agree, if you're mostly boondocking, the reports are usually very negative. As for water saving tips, aside from catching the cold water in a bucket while you're waiting for hot, I've seen a couple of people talk about recirculation plumbing and quite a few others just replace it with a tanked.

We have the tankless and we like it, never have to worry about not having hot water; but we don’t get off the grid. It will sometimes give us an E1 error but if I shut the water off and back on it usually goes away. Sometimes I have to turn the sink on first then the shower.

One way to save water is do all the hot water tasks together. Once the water gets hot, it’s hot instantly for the next few minutes so you don’t waste any.

Tankless is different. If you set the temp high and try to use hot and cold, you will hate it. It will shut off and on. With tankless, find out what temp you like for showering, and set the temp to that temp. Then straight hot. Doing dishes? Change the temp to 130 or whatever you like.
