Tires and spares

Greetings all,

We're planning longer trips this year and the tires on my Greyhawk look very good ... But that got me thinking about things I just don't know.

Like, do the tires on the Greyhawk need to be rotated? If so, what pattern should be used?

And a spare tire ... The book says to call for assistance, and we do have a Roadside Assistance plan ... But, I would imagine that the local RA first responder might not have a 225 75R16 on the truck ... Should I carry an unmounted spare ... Or buy a wheel and mount the spare?

Looking around, I see some bumper mounted spare tire racks can be a little pricey ... $500 plus, not counting the tire and wheel ... Or cover.

A quick measurement seems to indicate the spare would fit in the large exterior compartment on the right side ... Would that be a good or bad idea?

Lots of questions ... :)

Any help is always appreciated!

Thanks!

Regards, John

I just bought a spare this week and put it in my storage area. I did not get a wheel. Banking on the roadside assistance guy being able to use my rim that has the flat. Not sure how risky that is.

I would carry at least a tire. On a holiday or even a Sunday you may wait hours and hours for a tire to be located. Then you will pay a huge premium for a poor quality tire.

Mounted on a steel rim. They can change it quickly and be on your way.

I was concerned about getting stuck somewhere for a long time waiting for a tire. And then like you said, the price would be through the roof. I mounted a spare tire and rim using this. http://www.amazon.com/CURT-31006-Spare-Tire-Mount/dp/B0009YIE1O?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

And covered it with this. Amazon.com: Classic Accessories 75387 Overdrive Universal Fit Spare Tire Cover, Black, Large: Automotive

Les Schwab sold me the same size tire and rim for $235 so all total it was about $350. I'd rather pay that now than get stuck somewhere along side the road waiting for a tire. I still have to wait for roadside assistance to change it but at least I have it.

Greetings all,

Thank you all for the information! I definitely will get a tire, and probably a wheel ...

Never having had a vehicle with dualies, are all 6 wheels interchangeable?

Thanks again!

Regards,

John

...are all 6 wheels interchangeable?

Yes, they're all the same. 100 pounds of all the same. I rigged up a hoist on my RV port to reduce the chance of screwing up my back when installing it on my MH. I have to take it off now and then when I'm pulling the toad. I could have purchase a Roadmaster spare tire holder that allows me take the toad without removing the spare but $500 was a bit rich for me.
