Trailer Damaged during repairs

Hello, I have a 2.5 year old Eagle HT 25.5 REOK. Had suspension issues and had to leave the trailer at a non-jayco dealership in Pennsylvania (I'm from IL) this summer on 7/23.

During repairs the trailer fell off the jackstands with no suspension underneath, and I was only informed of minor damage to the trailer (long driver slide metal skirting) but after questions was told that a jackstand did puncture the underbelly and that is in vicinity of the water tank and kitchen grey tank. Was told the bumper (that is a 300/3000# tow hitch, which we use for tandems) took most of the fall and we are lucky.

Any suggestions on other possible damages, also now due to their negligence and incompetence my wife and I are missing 2 months (4 weekend trips canceled) of our favorite camping season. Is if unreasonable to expect a lower charge than originally estimated due to loss of camping time?

Thanks - Adam

Unless you have a written contract that states what will be done, by whom, and a completion date with post date penalties for non performance....no, you shouldn't expect anything other than what you agreed to in price.

However, you can ask. You might want to step back a bit more than arm's length before you do tho. What you are dealing with is the 'life happens' clause in every unwritten agreement.

If it were me, I would contact our insurance company and file a claim. They will go after the RV Dealer for all the damages.

They are not charging for damages that they inflicted thankfully (I would just call my lawyer at that point), but through the whole repair process I am just trying to decide how crappy of a deal I'm getting since they will have my trailer for 2 extra months during my favorite camping season AND getting a bill for full price repairs AFTER they bounced my trailer off their shop floor......

IF they were decent, they would eat the total cost of all repairs, their damage plus what it originally came in for. The goodwill they would show would go way further in the court of public opinion than the negative reviews will cause...

If you were planning to camp in the area during the two months, maybe you could guilt them into letting you use one of their used rigs while yours is in the shop? Also, unless you’re perfectly comfortable with everything they’re telling you about the incident, you might want to push to have an independent RV repair person go look at it now to verify they are disclosing all the damage they did. If you find something else after you get it back, they’ll never own up to saying they did it.

That's what I my wife was thinking, they should throw a bone our way.... Especially since they didn't record any measurements after they informed me the Spring Hangers were out of spec from Factory. So I followed with with Jayco and LCI, but the claim was dismissed after it took over 13 days to get photos of damage and still incomplete information, then the claim was dismissed from LCI because the dealership could not follow up and provide measurements and other requested info over the course of 28 days of dealing with LCI. I have day by day documentation that will be shared in a very unsatisfactory, factual review on EVERY site I can find. I joked with my wife if it gets ugly I'm buying the website XXXXRVsucks.com...... (disclaimer it is NOT at a Jayco dealer, and my local dealer is apalled by the WHOLE situation!)

Lucky Duck, if I was closer I would be pushing for a rental unit, but at 600 miles and $4.55 gas it is not worth it for me to go get a trailer for 4 weekends of camping......

I feel for you. A dealer can make a world of difference — good or bad. While not the same as your situation, it surprises me how many people will buy from a known lousy dealer or one far away just to save some money. Then, have nightmares when it comes to service/warranty issues. My local dealer more than offset the bit more I might’ve paid going elsewhere. Hang in there and good luck!

Have you personally seen your unit since the damage? Have you had eyes on it?

Unfortunately not. Its 600 miles away, now I wish I would have taken a day to drive out there, but I am a school teacher and it's tough to take off in the beginning of the school year. I was going to twice but we decided against it.

I just got off the phone with them, and after being dropped off the jacks and a jackstand puncturing the underbelly in the area of the axles, where the water tanks and grey tanks are, they had not yet road tested, checked the welds on the rear tow hitch (where the rear of the trailer landed), checked slides for function, checked doors for function (because that would be my first indication that the box is tweeked) or checked the landing gear being bent of functioning to name a few.... But hey what do I know I am not an RV tech, let alone a Shop foreman who was the one that told me all this. His exact words were that "more or less a bunch of guys from the shop kinda looked around under the trailer and it looked fine."

Not that anyone wants to go through this, but it is almost refreshing to hear that they actually told you about the issue. With you being so far away, it's almost shocking that they owned up to the damage. They very well could have pretended that nothing happened, fixed it without you knowing, and gave it back to you.

That's true they could have however we were going to pick it up in 4 days and it would not have been done because of them dropping it so they kind of had to tell us something was going on thankfully they were truthful! Still waiting to hear back on what they are willing to do to "make it right".....
