08 Jayco GreyHawk 31SS, E450, v10, 30k miles

Good day. We just purchased a new to us 08 Jayco GreyHawk. I did not notice on the test drive but I started hearing a noise from the transmission on our first trip.

After isolating when I have found that there’s a short squeal type sound when the TC lock disengages with light throttle pressure. If I give full pressure to cause a gear change there is no noise. If I remove my foot from the throttle and it disengages for coasting there is no noise.

I was able to isolate this down after a friend was telling me how to determine the difference between a shift and the TC lock. Once I was able to determine the difference, I was able to recreate the noise almost any time I want, which allowed me to isolate exactly when the noise occurs. After being able to determine the difference, I applied slight throttle pressure from a coast and watched as the lock engaged. I then applied a slight amount of more throttle and watched as the lock disengaged and the noise happened. It’s not a long noise, a 1/4 to 1/2 second, but it’s there and I’m certain it’s not normal.

I was wondering if anyone has experience this and found a solution or if there’s any Ford techs on here that may know a solution.

I’m planning on a fluid and filter change when I get home, in hopes this is all it needs. This brings my other question, what fluid do these use? The internet is all over the place and I don’t fully trust the parts stores nowadays. Thanks.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the transmission? What is the engine rpm when you hear this "squeal"? Very common to hear a noise under light acceleration around 2000 rpm due to the serpentine belt on the front of the V10. Read this (long) thread to start...there are lots of others if you search: e-450 engine rattle - serpentine belt

Thank you but it’s not happening at a particular speed or RPM. It’s specifically happening when the torque converter lock disengages with throttle pressure. If the lock does not disengage, the noise doesn’t happen despite the speed or RPM and it only lasts for a split second but it’s loud enough that you know it’s there.
