We just bought a 2024 Melbourne 24L, and when I turned on the heat for the first time the rig filled with an awful smell and the smoke detector sounded. Being a newbie and needless to say, I turned it off and woke up this morning freezing. What am I missing?

Just like any new furnace the heat exchanger needs to be burned off since they usually have a light coating of oil on them. This even occurs on residential units and you can even see a light haze coming from the vents on start up.

This was just another dealer fail since they obviously didn't PDI the rig and run the furnace before delivering it to you.

Like Grumpy said it needs to be run for a bit to clean it out. Open everything and run it for a while to clean it out.

Do I need to do anything besides set the thermostat? Are there any valves that I need to open or close?

I would look inside the furnace from both the inside of the coach and the outside just to make sure there’s not anything obstructing the air flow. But yeah sounds like you just need to run it for a bit and that issue should go away.

Normal as others said. The oven if you have one will do the same. Light them up, turn on the roof vent fan. And open a door or windows. The smell will be gone in an hour.

Heat

Thanks for the responses. I tested it this afternoon and everything worked out fine. I guess we'll be warm tonight.
