Who had the idea to put Water filter there ?!?

2025 Jayco Red Hawk SE 22. So today I winterized it for the first time. The owners manual instructs you to remove the element from the water filter. It is a back-breaker to wedge yourself into the bottom of the cabinet where it’s located. But why in the world would the generator transfer switch and the main power converter be screwed to the floor, directly under the filter housing ?!? It’s almost a sure thing that a couple drops of water will spill out as you remove the canister, and land right on top these electrical items. And how about if the filter is not exactly sealing up and a little bit of water leaks out and lands there ? I know they say to put a pail or something under the canister to catch anything as you take it out but with the tangle of pipes and wires under there, that’s not actually possible.

Who designed this ? Not very safe or practical.

I removed the water filter cartridge from our 29 mv the we first bought it. I've always used a in line water filter installed at the beginning of the water source. Our water filter is located under the sink in the bathroom, fairly easy to access, but I can see where it would make a mess when changing.

X2. We had a Greyhawk a few years ago. I removed the filter and its housing because it provided easier access. Those filters don't do anything more than an external inline filter.

we have a 2019 Redhawk class c 22j the water filter location was a Pia. I removed the filter cartridge but left the canister installed. too much to remove and reconnect the water lines in a space about the size of a shoe box located behind the bottom clothes drawer. when winterizing canister fills up with rv antifreeze just like it normally would without the filter. no issues in 5 yrs.

I too removed filter cartridge and use an inline I replace inline each season. For winterization I would use a shop vac to remove filter housing water. I hate that all that water and electronics are stuffed into that space (Drawer and hanging lock, pantry unit). I've thought of putting a bypass around the filter like the hot water heater.

I forgot to mention the best part. Once I got the canister removed I discovered that the dealer never put the actual filter element in there.

As many of you mentioned, I too have been using the external in-line filters on past RVs. I will do the same with this RV too.

But all that electrical gear directly below this filter just makes me shake my head…. Who thought that was a good idea Jayco ?

I'm guessing how it got there was fairly simple

Sales and Marketing "we need to add a filter. Folks are asking about them and it will be a nice extra we can make a profit on.

Engineering. Sure, but we will have to redesign the entire water system in every unit to find a safe and easy place to locate the filter.

Accounting. That's a no go. No money in the budget for all that engineering work. Why can't you just find one if those nooks or crannies you're always complaining about wasting space?

Marketing. Our customers are resourceful and will make it work which complaining on line. It'll update the website.

I'm not sure the make/model of your filter, but for mine I found filters available at Lowes. Significantly less than buying the mfg's replacements.

A lot of the external filters stop (or used to stop) at the 20 micron filtration level. The internal filters I buy go down to 5 microns. If I'm bothering to use a filter at all, I want a filter that filters.

Also, the lines for the water fill inlet are in the same compartment on my 2021 Redhawk 22C. I had a leak where the line connected to the inlet. Fortunately, I caught it before the electrical system fried. Totally stupid design! One of the first things I learned as a kid is that water and electricity don't mix. This winter, I am going to try to construct some type of shield to protect the electrical equipment and install a leak detector in that compartment.

I also removed mine. Not worth the work when its time to winterize. I just replaced it with a waterline. I dont bother with a filter but if i feel the need i will use a inline filter on the hose

Removing the filter will not solve the potential cannister leakage scenerio. Maybe also put a water alarm under the cannister.

I removed everything including the cannister. Just replaced with a water line and it doesnt have any better chance of leaking than any other part of the water system
