Will it work?

We have the exact same fan in our 28.5 RSTS and it is worthless and loud. Bought a good maxair, and was ready to install it and realized the inside shroud did not fit. As others noted, they trimmed the existing shroud which has rounded corners, somehow to make it fit. I "chickened out" on trimming the shroud (thinking it would splinter or crack) and gave up on the project. Kinda wish I had stuck it out.

Yea it pissed me off when I saw the new shroud wouldn't fit without a bunch of cutting. I did have to trim the four corners of the old one just a bit to get it to fit. Looks like it belongs there so I'm happy.

What do you mean by trim the 4 corners of the old shroud? Cut them? Sand them? I just want to make sure I know what I am getting myself into. Thanks!

It was very easy. Minimal trimming. I used the old shroud and just had to cut the top corner about an inch on each corner that fits against the fan. I think I even used scissors, it was that easy.

Thanks rkymntsno!
Another question (probably not the last).....any advice on removing the old roof part? Difficult? Pics below.....

It's not hard at all. You can see the raised part of all the screws. Just scrape off the old dicor, preferrably a plastic putty knife but a metal will work if you're careful. The dicor that's at the edge of the flange where it meets the roof is where you wanna be careful not scraping the roofing material. Remove all the screws and the old fan/vent should pull up. Then just clean the area with the plastic putty knife and some mineral spirits if needed. Make sure you put down new butyl tape all around the opening where the screws are gonna go. Eternabond is nice to have in case you scrape the roofing membrane. But not needed. Disconnect old wiring, connect to new wiring on the new fan, dicor in place and you'll be done. You'll dicor all the way around the new fan just like your old one was.

Ok great! Ordering the maxxair fan now, and Dicor self leveling, and butyl tape.

Just ask if you have any more questions. There's many on here that have done the swap that will chime in too. Direct message me if you need to once you're ready to do the swapout.

I did this swap also, it will be much easier to do now while it's relatively new and the dicor and butyl tape is still pliable. Get a plastic putty knife and be very careful with the roof membrane. Start early, and by the time you get the old one out you may be able to let the sun warm up the old sealant and just be able to clean up the opening without using any solvents. I was able to do this on mine. You won't regret it, just take your time getting the old fan out. Take a small container to put the screws into as you remove them or you will likely step or sit on one and punch a hole in the membrane. Good luck!

Great advice, thank you!!

I really like and use the small, magnetic bowls they sell for a few dollars at Harbor Freight to keep screws, nuts, bolts, etc. in place.
Suggestion, a hair dryer on low or medium (NOT A HEAT GUN!) to warm up the old sealant. Especially helpful on cold days.

More great advice! I love it, thank you!

I will be using all of these ideas!

I did it!! Replaced the crappy fan! It all went without a hitch, which is unheard of for me! I didn't even have to do any mods at all, it all fit perfect. Even the "old" sealant came off easily. Pics below.

There is one thing but it's probably the fan....it is connected exactly like the old fan, which worked off a wall switch. The new fan also works off the wall switch. Meaning the switch has to be on for the fan to work. Then you turn it off by using the switch. BUT.....it will not turn back on using the switch! You have to turn on the switch then push start on the fan. Anything I can do about this? Picture of wires below.

Also, just an fyi.....I am a single female and pride myself on doing these mods and fixes myself but, I would never be able to do any of it without all the help you guys give! Thank you!!
