First, it's likely the floor of your pantry would not permit enough air circulation. DW and I received a thermometric unit (no compressor or fan) as a gift and it lasted a couple of years. We kept it on the floor, under a desk area in the kitchen in our
not air conditioned sticks & bricks. There was always a noticeable amount of heat exiting around the top of the unit.
Second, if you boondock, a wine cooler would require power almost like running a second refrigerator. That may or may not be an issue for you.
We belong to a wine club, so we may have up to 15 bottles of red wine on hand. We don't have any really good wine that we store for any length of time. We didn't think a dedicated wine cooler was worth the effort, so when the weather warms and our home pantry gets too warm, we keep the wine in the fridge. And when on the road, under the bed we have a 15 bottle 'shipping box' container the wine clubs ships the wine in; it's sturdy and fairly well insulated.
