Magnetic Switch for Pantry LEDs - Help

I want to install LEDs (via strip) in my pantry and have a question on how to wire the magnetic switch (purchased via Amazon) that will attach to the door. Ran 12v power to cabinet base and trying to figure out wiring it. Idea is when pantry door is open, LEDs turn on, close door and LEDS turn off. Simple concept but I have fried one magnetic switch already and don't want to do it again... I am no electrician obviously. Do I need to install a relay as part of the circuit?

Hello, first off The switch needs to be a normally closed switch. So when the pantry door is closed the leds are off. Second the switch needs to be in series with the positive so it interrupts the power going to the leds. But the contact must be rated for the load. So if the leds draw too much current then your switch will fry.

It looks like the switch is a NO/NC so both options are included. The only issue is the current that the LED's will put on the switch. Most of these door/window security sensors are only good for about .2Amps, if the current is to high the contacts will usually end up staying in the closed (NC) position and the lights will stay on.

Wired like this? I would expect those reed switches to handle LEDs without issue.

You should consider just using a PIR motion switch mounted inside the cabinet.
