18 months off

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I’ve been on. My wife and I were rear ended by a DUI at 55mph January 2023. After a lengthy stay in the hospital and at home recovery we are ready to hit the road for a couple months. We have a 2020 Jayco 37HJ that has been in storage for about 18 months. Hooked up and winterized while stored. I need recommendations of what’s needed maintenance wise to make sure all is up to par before we head across country. As always I appreciate the recommendations.

Very sorry to hear about your accident. I lost a close friend to a 3 time DUI driver, the laws are not nearly strict enough for repeat offenders.

I would siphon out the DEF and replace that and get some diesel additive to put in the tank before you start it up. Then would drive it someplace for an oil change and chassis lube.

Would also worry a bit about the generator as those are really supposed to be ran every month or so. Will need to change the oil on the generator at a minimum.

He was 4 times over the limit….32. He pled guilty to Felony DUI and on the day of sentencing the judge reduced it to a misdemeanor time served. Ridiculous. Thanks so much for the suggestions.

So sorry to hear of your unfortunate accident. I hope you and your wife are all healed completely and feeling well for your next adventure.

Check your tires carefully and de-winterize the plumbing, maybe thinking about sanitizing the system. Have a wonderful trip!

I know how you feel, literally!. Knocked off my bike and spent last summer with shoulder surgery and recovery with zero ability to camp.
My RV is a a simple trailer but I will be pulling the wheels, greasing and inspecting tires and brakes. Purge the water system, fill fresh tank, operate water heater and pump, toilet, sink and tub. Light furnace, water heater and fridge and cycle AC. Run enough water into black and grey to make sure valves hold and no leaks. Inspect roof (couldn't last summer).

Basically what I do every spring but with a little more care as longer time in storage.

Some great advice as usual. Thanks so much! We are inching towards retirement and this happened. This selfish world is not the same anymore. Just thankful we are still here. As always could have been worse.

I’m guessing 4 year old chassis batteries are on their last leg?

I know you mentioned that the rig was "hooked up" and I am assuming that meant plugged-in to power. But your safest bet to prevent a "surprise" would be to have all six batteries load-tested to ensure they are satisfactory before a trip.

Glad to hear you survived the event and are ready to roll again!

There is not much justice or penalties for crimes anymore!

Good idea to have them all load tested. I added it to my list. The justice system isn’t justice anymore. He pled guilty to a felony DUI, however, on the day of sentencing the judge reduced it to a misdemeanor causing injury and time served. So crazy. We just have to move on and count our blessings for sure.
