Crabman suffers a blowout.
Crabman suffers blowout Sunday just outside of Crisfield Md. returning from Janes Island SP. Tires are Good Year China Marathons and are date coded 2008 so its time to replace. Was only a few miles from campground so speed and heat were not a factor. I had just completed my usual walk around before departure and the tires were not noticeably low on air. Luckily I saw the damaged tire when making a turn and it must have just happened cause there was no damage to the wheel well or anything else. The sidewall blew out but the tread did not have a chance to separate and flap into the wheel well which usually wrecks havoc. Pulled over at an old abandoned gas station and put on the spare.
New set of Maxxis load range D (had C on old tires ) will be ordered post haste.

Good to hear it didn't do any damage. That's quite the blow out. Front or rear axle?

You are most fortunate.
I had 2 of my China Marathons blow last month. They were all less than 2 years old. First one did 2k damage to the side of my rig. Second one had tread separation and went flat while I was camped.
After the dust cleared with Goodyear, Insurance and local dealer, I have 5 new G614s on the rig and it is at the dealer getting repaired.

Rear axle. The sidewalls on these tires are very thin and soft.

That's a good failure when you don't get camper damage along with it.
I will not run one of those tires farther than from camper dealer to tire dealer and in my case that's about 5 miles of white knuckle time.
Maxxis is a good choice and going from C to D is another good decision.

Glad there wasn't any damage . Seeing and stopping is very important. Had a friend have that happen last week on the way to Florida he was not so lucky as he had some damage . I am really thinking about tire minder as we usually put 5 to 6 thousand miles on a year.

I think the "noticeably low on air" is the key. It's been a couple of years now, but when I replaced all my tires after a blowout the mechanic told me that the valves were all cracked and in bad shape. The tires were only 3 years old, but the valves maybe had not been replaced with the tires. The valve on the tire that blew probably let the tire deflate and then the walls flex too much and give out.

When pricing ST tires I noticed the Maxxis were a bit higher then the Marathons and others. But folks seem to have nothing but good things to say about them. Money well spent for the peace of mind. I have 4 on the way...

Wow....I just put my 5er into winter storage so I will wait till March to replace my 2008 dated Marathons. Planning on it anyway but the pics will be a reminder to get this done before next season. Glad you and your RV are safe.

I have yet to find one negative post concerning a Maxxis tire.

Since posting on this subject a few hours earlier, I have been doing a local search trying to find Maxxis tires. Are they sold by one of the chain tire shops or other chain stores or will I need to order them and have them shipped? Maybe they are hiding from me in plain view, but I am having no luck finding them in my city.

Many tire retailers can order them or they can be ordered online and shipped to you.

Discount Tires has Maxxis tires and a good price to with free shipping. That's where I got mine. If you have a Discount Tire store nearby they will also mount them for you and give you free rotate and rebalance as needed plus free road hazard warranty. I have also bought them from Simple Tire online.

Glad to hear no damage or accident. While I don't have alot of miles on mine or age yet, I have been very pleased with my Maxxis tires.

Like I said on another thread, a friend of mine worked for a tire distributor in LA that handles Maxxis tires. In the three years he worked there they never had a single Maxxis tire returned for any reason. I'm sold...

Thanks for all your help, guys. I have a Discount Tire about 2 miles from my house. Guess I didn't do a proper search when accessing their web page earlier. Will price them and also check with realdealtires.com.
