It probably depends a lot on local weather. I see many of those who leave theirs open are in lower latitudes. Like @RusticEagle, I keep mine closed in the winter, but open all summer. In our area, sustained periods of 30+mph winds and dry snow will cause the snow to blow horizontally and fill every crevice it can find. I trust my MaxxAir to keep out rain in the summer, but rain almost never blows horizontally, at least not for hours on end.
I keep a damp rid bucket open in the kitchen sink, but once the air hits -30 or so, there is almost no moisture left in it anyway.
