OK, so I wanted to do the screen-door, spring auto-close mod myself. After camping with the 3 grand-kids and watching the screen-door left opened too many time and bugs getting in, we needed this mod. I’ve seen this mod recently done and the OP was not that impressed with the results. I also watched the 1 youtube video on the installation. I could see why the results might not be that good, based on how its suggested you install the springs. So I bought the kit and started looking at the screen door, trying to figure out a better way to install the springs. So I decided to install mine so the spring wraps around the door frame. I figured it should cause more pulling tension when the door is opened. So I just picked a spot on the door to install it up high. Then I pulled down on the spring, about 2” like the instruction suggest and screwed it to the back of the inside door frame. The door frame has a recessed channel for the door to go into it, but there is still enough of a gap for the screw. Just make sure you are as close to the outside edge as possible.
Now just using 1 spring, it works Perfect! The door shuts nice, every time and doesn’t close that hard. Using only 1 spring seems to have the perfect tension for door to shut. The DW thinks this was one of the best mod’s I’ve done. It’s great going out with your hands full and not having to worry about the door staying open. Worth the 5 minutes it takes to install and a whopping $6.
