X17Z Get on roof question
i may need to get on the roof of our X17Z. Is it okay to get up on it? If so, should I put something down like a piece of cardboard or plywood down first.

My SLX16 XRB has a very strong roof. They showed me a video where they placed close to 3K pounds on the roof before it began to buckle. Supposedly, the Jayco Featherlites are built stronger than the competitor in this aspect.
I've been on my roof many times to place the cover over it when its being stored.

You should go up there twice a year to clean it, but more importantly to check the sealants.
I recommend putting down the stabilizers toss a towel or something similar between the ladder and the roof. The roof membrane is very thin and can tear really easy. Take things out of your pockets and check your shoes for rocks.

I went up there once to install a Maxair vent cover - roof seemed strong enough, no flexing or anything. Good point about being careful around the roof membrane, it does seem like it could tear easily.

You can go up there just don't dance a jig or anything like that.. AND NEVER WALK BACKWARDS ON THE ROOF... guy 2 blocks down from me did that last summer and walked right off the roof..

Thank you for the information. Instead of moving the trailer to fix the owl on the side of the house I can just get up on the roof of the trailer to do it. Yes, I mounted an owl on the side of our house. It keeps the woodpecker from pecking holes in the siding.

All Jayco hybrids are built with walkable roofs. It should tell you that somewhere in your manual.

I wrote to Jayco about getting up on the roof due primarily to the fact I weigh 350Lbs. Not that I would ever go up there anyway..at least not until I lose a bunch of pounds but nontheless I wrote them anyway. Luckily for me my DW volunteers to go up on the roof for me while I move around the perimeter on a ladder.
My Question to Jayco:
Hi there,
I am the Owner of a 2013 Jayco X20E. In order to maintain the roof I see where people can and do climb up on it. Being a hefty fella myself, I am concerned about my weight being to much for the roof to handle. Can you tell me what the Weight Limit is for someone to be up on the roof of this trailer.
Also I have a second question: the roof membrane has a fair bit of extra material along the non-curb side where the roof joins/pulls over the siding which runs the entire length from front to back. Is it normal to have this excessive material creating a bubble/wave on the roof? I'm afraid it will snag easily if I happen to hit a branch pulling in somewhere. I thought that was all glued down and pulled tight from side to side then rolled to adhere the glue?
Thank you in advance,
This is the response I got back:
Jayco doesn’t have a weight rating for the roof, therefore we advise the customers to use caution when accessing the roof and if need be use a sheet of plywood to spread the weight of an individual on the roof. It is common to have extra or what appears to be extra roof material on the edges with an occasional bubble or wrinkle. We suggest the customers typically this is nothing to be concerned about though should keep an eye on the wrinkle or bubble.

I feel the same way. I've got a 2015 264BHW and have been looking at adding a wingman to the antenna as well as a few other rooftop mods but am concerned about how the roof will hold up to my weight. I'm just a hair under 350Lb at the moment. I've seen the crush test video but am taking it with a grain of salt.

One thing I noticed with my X20E is that the front roof section flexes a bit more than I would like it to. I'm usually just on my hands and knees up there anyway so it hasn't been a big deal.

Are you my size Doc? LOL.
I would be too afraid of getting up there myself.

Ha! More like half your size. But you'll want to pass on what I said to anyone who climbs on your roof for you.

HAHA... Gotcha.
I will be sure to pass along your good advice. If I think of it in the spring, I'll have my wife check to see if our roof is a bit spongy there as well. I will also have to look for that lift kit we've been discussing in the other thread.

Have been on the roof of our x23j a couple of times. Walked around to check sealants and remove snow. Try to stay mainly in the edges. But this year, with all the snow we have been getting in the Boston area, after a couple of storms I didn't dare climb on the roof with all that snow. Removed snow using a plastic shovel and standing on a ladder. Got the majority of snow off before the 4th storm in 3 weeks hit. Have snow on there again but not as much. Didn't notice any type of sagging. Worse winter here in years! Makes me long all the more for camping weather.

While this link provides specifics to the 2015 lineup, it shows you can easily search the web for your specific year to obtain roof strengths and construction for Jayco models:

There you go, send the wife up on the roof instead of yourself. And have her walk backwards, as one other post warned against.
My wife read this...I'm now living in the TT!

I'm not sure "spongy" is the right term. When I think of spongy, I think of possible rotted areas. What I'm experiencing is more flex, like there is no support under front roof section.

I know what you mean Doc. It's good information and something we'll check out for sure. Wouldn't want to go thru the roof with a misplaced step if that's occurring.
As for sleeping in the TT, That is one reason I bought one, it's an upgrade from the garage. Just never, "EVER" say that to the DW.
