Sway command recall
NHTSA Campaign ID: 16V560000
Jayco, Inc.
2016
JAYCO
JAY FLIGHT
20160727
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL
Potential # of Units Affected: 3085
Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Jay Feather, Jay Flight, Jay Flight SLX, Eagle, White Hawk, and Octane travel trailers manufactured January 5, 2016, to July 18, 2016, equipped with a Sway Command anti-sway system. When connected to certain tow vehicles that have an integrated brake controller, and after the anti-sway system has applied the trailer brakes in response to a sway event, the trailer brakes may no longer function to slow or stop the trailer.
A loss of trailer brakes may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle and cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will remove the Sway Command system from the affected travel trailers, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267. Jayco''s number for this recall is 9901308.

Thank you posting this.
I have an aftermarket brake controller, I believe the recall deals with factory equiptment.
And for those that purchased this option and other that uninstalling sway command free of charge, those with sway command already was charged when we purchased the RV.
In this case, would we receive a refund for the option purchase price?
Thank you.

Wow! This is very scary. I just called Jayco and although our Whitehawk is prepped for sway command, it wasn't installed at the factory.
Because I am exceedingly paranoid, I'm also going to call the dealer and make sure they didn't install it later. I don't believe so, but better safe than sorry!
Thanks for posting about this, Rick!

Yeah, I'd like to know about the compensation for removing the system. Even if they give full replacement value, it is hardly worth the time, fuel, and having my camper monkeyed with. I don't think my oem controller is one affected, so I might just let it ride...

Good question. I would hope that Jayco would reimburse owners for a charged option they can't use! I never thought to ask this question when I spoke to Jayco since it's not installed on our unit.

Is there a list of which vehicle's integrated towing brake system that are affected?

I read somewhere that it was GM products. Not sure though.

My new White Hawk is prepped but it's not installed... as Loboclone said... another Lippert disaster.

Check out the note on this page. I'm going to keep mine since it's not affected.

Several years ago, I signed up for the Good Sam recall notices. I get notices before the dealers even know about them. This includes my vehicles as well as the RV. My 28BHBE does not have the Sway Command, but when I got this recall notice, I remember reading in this forum about others that had it. Thus, my posting. We are here to HELP EACH OTHER!
Here is Lippert's phone number. maybe they can tell you which vehicles are affected?

Like you, I'm keeping mine. It's ridiculous, however, that Lippert didn't have this figured out for the affected GM vehicles in advance...

Jayco Advises Removing Sway Command, REGARDLESS of Tow Vehicle (for now)
I just spoke with Sean at Jayco customer service reference the Sway Command recall. He just now received a copy of the notice that Jayco is sending to owners with Sway Command, and he read it to me over the phone.
Bottom line - Jayco is advising ALL customers to disable/remove Sway Command, regardless of whether Lippert says it's compatible with your tow vehicle/brake controller or not. Jayco is not yet confident enough in Lippert's findings to advise otherwise. Since they've obviously been burned pretty good by this Lippert failure, I can't say I blame them.
Sean said this is a situation that is going to continue to develop and that the company's guidance may change, but for now the letter advises making an appointment at your Jayco dealer to have Sway Command removed at no cost to you. You will then be refunded $375. The company's instruction letter also says that it is furnishing instructions to owners so that they can safely disable Sway Command on their own if they don't want to go to a dealer/dealer is hundreds of miles away (that's my situation).
The question I had that can't yet be answered is "if I disable it myself, do I get the refund, and if so do I have to return the Sway Command components to get it?" There's a difference between "disabling" and "uninstalling" and I'm not looking forward to removing the Sway Command indicator from my front cap and staring at the now pointless mounting holes - ugh.
Sean said to expect the letter of instruction any day now. He advised disabling/removing regardless of tow vehicle because "It's better to err on the side of caution" when it comes to trailer brakes. I agree, but I'm also hoping I can disable the system, hold onto the components, and then at some date in the near future reactivate it IF Jayco and Lippert can BOTH assure me that the system will work safely with my tow vehicle.
Guess we all need to stay tuned...

Just spoke with Lippert customer service. Their position is the same as Jayco's at the moment - disable Sway Command, regardless of tow vehicle. The Lippert rep also said that engineers are working to debug the system, which they hope happens pretty quickly and may be as simple as a software/firmware rewrite, although hardware (gyroscope/sensors) could also come into play.
Given this, I think I'm going to follow Jayco's "disable" instructions when I receive them and wait for further developments before physically pulling Sway Command off the trailer. I'm not traveling for another 6 weeks so I can afford to be a little patient...

I have a 2015 f150 and have disabled mine for now. My dealer is a long distance away so like you I am hoping I do not have to fully remove unit. Wait and see like you said

That's what I said to both company representatives. But both insisted that for now at least, the system should be disabled regardless of your tow vehicle make and model.

What I did was followed the leads from the lippert box to all the wires run on the front of my trailer. The lippert box is about a foot from it, I then disconnected the wires from there as well their is another one that appears to be a ground. You can just unplug it from the lippert box, I decided I would permanently disconnected it as I would imagine Jayco will want it back. I have a 2016 f150 that has sway control on it as well.
