Fridge on When Traveling

I know this was brought up before, but I think it was more geared for newer unit. Have a 1986 Jayco, Class "C". The fridge works fine in my driveway, it will come on using propane when the shorepower is discounted and aux battery connected.
Since this is a older rig what do people think about keeping it running while on the road. From what I have seen here, I know it is best to get the fridge cold on shore power the night before.
Worried about wind getting to the propane flame
Thanks

We have towed since 1983 and have always left our fridge on when traveling. So far, no problem. You should turn it off when you fuel up your motorhome, cuz if the spark igniter should decide to re-ignite the fridge on as you are fueling, you could have a KA-blooie!!

Trust me, KA-blooies are no fun!

If you fridge is on the opposite side away from your fuel cap, then I wouldn't worry about it so much. Less chance of KA-blooie.

My understanding is that it is illegal to drive with the propane on. We used our tent trailer fridge on 12v but that seems to be a thing of the past.

It isn't illegal to drive down the highway with your propane refrigerator running, BUT, It is illegal to be near a gas pump with an open flame.
Personally, I keep my refrigerator running while we travel and have never had the flame get blown out. When we pull into a gas station or truck stop to get fuel, Before we get near the gas pump, someone goes inside the trailer and shuts off the refrigerator. Then after I pull away, we turn it back on.

I was told when we bought our rv it was illegal but seems you are right just went through our motor vehicle act and it only says it is illegal to be near fuel station or going through a tunnel or on a ferry.

Our old rig was a 1989 Coachman C Class. We always operated as you stated, get it cold on shore power then switch to LP when we roll out from the driveway. We always left it on during driving and never had any issues (our unit was on the opposite side of the fuel fill).

I never have, but I've heard you can and it's fine. Although, I've seen some nasty stuff on YouTube addressing the issue. Shows TV's and RV's engulfed due to having an accident while running propane. Think I'll just stick with the "ol' coolers".

When we took delivery we were told that if you get the fridge & freezer cold before you leave it will stay cold (and frozen in freezer) up to 4 hours.
They recommended plugging in one day before we leave to start getting it cold.
I've driven close to that (3.5 hours) and he was right on it. No problem keeping things cold/frozen while traveling without propane

If we are going under 3 hours we keep it off otherwise we will run it on propane for the longer trips. We plug in to shore power at home and get it cold a day before.
