2008 Jayfeather 165 sport

Hello,

I hope it's okay to post this here...

I'm considering purchasing a '08 Jayfeather 165 sport - it's a bit of drive to check it out, so I have not seen it in person yet. From the pictures (which I know can be deceiving) it looks like it is in excellent condition. If it looks as good in person, is $6,500 a fair price? I believe it has some optional equipment - ac, outdoor grill, sway bar. Or is that priced too high? As I mentioned, it's a drive to check it out, so I don't want to make the trip if it's not worth it. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions!

NADAguides.com can help. That TT is 9 years old. Depends on how much use it's had and if the owner did his PM. Check the roof for cracked caulking, etc. Probably has the original tires so you might be able to use that to negotiate. Ask him to plug in the fridge well before you arrive so you can confirm that it works (new one is $1200). Check the AC. Check for soft spots in the floor; these have something of a design flaw. Be aware the the CCC s very low on these TTs (my X17C is around 500#). Depends on your geographic location too: and you're buying during peak time of the year!

Good luck! Life's too short to worry about a few bucks here and there....

Penguin- Thank you for the reply! I believe Nada had it at around $5380. I'm just having hard time gauging what is a fair value because everything around here (Seattle) seems to be priced fairly high above Nada values. And it is of course, the high season. Would you mind sharing more info with me regarding the design flaw? Is that certain years or models? I'm pretty restricted with towing capacity (4Runner) and a new vehicle isn't an option.

I think towing-wise you'll be OK. I towed my HTT with a 2012 Nissan Frontier and did fine...even in some of the hills of Kentucky.

The perceived design flaw is the construction of the floor: styrofoam sandwiched between two 1/4" pieces of luan plywood. It's vacuum sealed and works well in most cases....but you hear some people complain of soft spots where the distance between the aluminum joists doesn't support the floor & weight it carries. I haven't had any problems with my X17C but looked at a Trail Cruiser(?) that had a spot right inside of the entry door. The spots can be somewhat fixed by adding support under the trailer but that involves opening the undercoating etc. If a 2008 hasn't developed the problem, it's probably OK....it seems to be either you have the problem rather quickly or you don't have it at all.

You would have to be the one that decides if $1,120 over NADA is acceptable. Condition, availability, etc. all play into far market value.

Good luck!

I sold my 2008 in excellent condition with all accessories and dishes for $6500 in 2014. Seems high to me.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the design flaw. After looking at a 197 nearby, we're going to make the trip to check out the 165; it's nice to have something very similar to compare it to. We'll see if it looks as good in person as it does online.

I wish I could have bought yours, Doug! We'll see what kind of condition it's in and whether we're willing to pay $6500.

Thanks, Penguin! We made the drive to check it out, and although we were really hoping to purchase, it just didn't seem like a good idea. We didn't feel confident that routine preventative maintenance had been preformed.

We are going to look at a 2012 Jay Flight SLX 184BH tomorrow... hoping it goes well!
