Power question... Can I do this?

Hello! I have a 28RLS with 50 amp service. I park the TT near a shop that has a 30amp connection used with a welder. I do not have enough length of 50 amp power cord or extension to make it there.

I am wondering if I can use the 50 feet or so of 30 amp cord (since 30 amps is all I will be able to pull anyways) and then connect a 50 to 30 adapter followed by my 50 amp progressive industries EMS followed by the 50 amp cord into the TT to have some power.

Basically, going from the shop to the TT it would be:
-30 amp connection in wall
-30 amp cord (is less than 50 feet)
-50 to 30 adapter (progressive industries)
-50 amp EMS (EMS-PT50X)
-50 amp cord and possibly one 25' extension
-50 amp connection on TT

I know I can't pull 50 amps from a 30 and after the length of extension I suppose I won't even pull 30 but I am wondering if this is safe and if it will work as well as how the adapters will work in the middle of the lengths of extension cord. The alternative, I suppose, is buying a longer 50 amp extension cord but given the prices of those, I wanted to check.

That 30 amp welder line is probably 220 so be very careful and check that first.

If it's a 30 amp 120 outlet yes it will work

Should be fine as long as you don't exceed the draw rating of the weakest link in the chain. Considering the length of everything involved you would probably want to stay below 20 amps or so just to be safe. But you can easily feel for heat with your hand anywhere along the line.

Good catch Grumpy!

Ooh yeah so I didn't even consider that... Glad I asked. If it is 220 am I just best having a 50 amp 110 installed down there?

It might work but not a great idea to connect to a welding outlet unless you know for sure what it is and how it's wired. As mentioned check your voltages. The other big one most people probably don't know is that a 30A welding outlet can have a breaker ahead of it up to 200% and sometimes even higher depending on the original application it was installed for.

Actually 50 Amp is 220, 2-110 volt legs with 1 neutral and 1 ground. That welder line is probably 2-110 legs and a ground no neutral. A 30 amp RV line is 1-110 leg, 1 neutral and 1 ground.

To sum up what Grumpy accurately said, if it is a welder (or older style dryer) outlet, you can't do what you want to do with that outlet, no matter what kind of adapter you use because you will not have a neutral.
