Spree

When summarizing the plumbing is it necessary to fill and empty the tanks twice as our tanks hold 86 gallons

Ideally yes. 1st time ed to add the bleach to sterilize. The second time to rinse. You might be able modify this step. Partially file and drain. Then when you are ready to go on your next trip add about 5 to 10 gallons of water and let it slosh as you drive to camp. When you get there open the low point drain as you check in. Then file the tank as needed.

I've found that it takes 3 or 4 rinses to get that chlorine taste out of the water. Yes, it uses a whole lot of water, and takes a long, long time. Just make sure you flush plenty of water through your lines to remove the chlorine from them, too.

I agree, it takes a few rinses to get the bleach smell out of the tank, however... we never drink from our fresh water tank and after 1 rinse there is so little bleach left over that you may smell it but its not going to hurt anything.

We drink bottled water. We clean the tanks once a year but don't worry about doing a perfect job so I rinse once.
